Advice to Families on Staying the Course During the Coronavirus Closures
With schools closed, COVID-19 news coming at a rapid pace and an increasing number of people in the Houston region now under stay-at-home orders from local officials, feeling overwhelmed is understandable. But you’re not alone. People across Texas and around the world are going through many of the same struggles, dealing with many of the same questions and uncertainties.
But there are basic things you can do to help navigate through this time, and we’ve included a few of them below. And remember, it’s not about perfection. It’s about staying grounded, staying safe, and staying the course.
Stay Calm – Children pick up on their parents’ emotions. Try to start by managing your own mood, then addressing how your kids are feeling. Try some deep breathing or meditation, listen to a favorite song, recite a well-loved prayer, and remind yourself to take it one day at a time.
Stay Focused – You might be feeling a little scattered. Try making a list of things you need to do, but don’t go overboard. Remember to pace yourself to help avoid burnout.
Stay Organized – Many experts advise that daily schedules and routines are just as important now as ever. That goes for children, and adults as well!
Stay Active – It might feel a little like life is on hold right now with so many things canceled, but staying active – both physically and mentally – is the best way to ensure you and your children are ready, no matter what comes. Whether it’s living room dance parties, a staircase fun run, or a walk around the block, don’t forget to move!
Stay Safe – You and your family might be feeling a little stir-crazy, but it’s a bad time to lower your guard against the potential spread of COVID-19. Stay home as much as you can, practice good hygiene, and keep up those handwashing drills!
Stay Hopeful – While doing what needs to be done to get through the day, remember that keeping a positive mindset will help support you and your family during this time. Wherever you go for strength when times are tough, remember to check in regularly with sources of inspiration that help ground you and keep you feeling hopeful.
Stay Helpful – Right now, being helpful might look different from what many of us are used to, but there are still things you can do while keeping your distance and staying safe. Donate to a local food bank or other charity. See if an elderly neighbor needs anything from the store. Or just call up a friend or relative to talk and offer some moral support.
These days, every little bit helps!
