Notes from the AMEA President

Hello everyone! AMEA and your constituent organizations have been hard at work preparing the 2020 AMEA Conference! There are going to be lots of outstanding sessions to choose from. Our next issue in December will be all about the conference. In the meantime, make sure you are getting yourself registered to attend! You can do this on the AMEA website. Also, be sure to check out our conference awards and nominate some well-deserving folks!

There are also some other exciting things in the works. With the help of Guitar Ex-Officio Chuck Hulihan, AMEA is in the process of creating an all-state festival for guitar for the 2020-21 school year. We will share more info as soon as it is available. Our Advocacy Ex-Officio, Stephanie Campbell, is working hard gathering contact information for booster groups in our state so that we can team up and advocate for music education together! Our constituent organization boards have also been working hard to bring you and your students many high quality musical opportunities.

We all try and do everything possible to make your membership in this organization worth it. Please help us by encouraging your colleagues to become members, especially those new teachers who may not understand the benefits. Thank you for all that you do!

Scott Burgener

AMEA President 2019-2021

AMEA Conference Exhibit News

There are some exciting things happening in the AMEA Conference exhibit area for the upcoming conference. We have listened to both exhibitors and members saying they would like some additional exhibit time. When you see the final schedule this year you will see additional exhibitor time in the schedule to allow the attendees more time and not feel so rushed during the breaks allowing you to accomplish more with the exhibitors. Below are some suggestions to possibly make your time even more productive.

  1. Contact exhibitors prior to the conference.
  2. Verify that they are going to be exhibiting and now is a good time to check with them. If you let them know that you are looking to do some specific business with them that will encourage some to sign up and attend if they are waffling. You could be the driving force.
  3. Vendors would be happy to have you arrive with a P.O. to purchase items, bring a credit card (district or your own), provide you with supplies, music, a special deal on an instrument, and more. I would suggest you contact them in advance, let them know specifics and you will more than likely be able to “walk away” with product in hand. Avoids shipping charges etc.
  4. The list of vendors will be updated prior to the conference and will allow you to plan accordingly.
  5. The additional time will allow more time directly with the exhibitors and more time to visit with your colleagues.

If you are wondering if a specific exhibitor is registered feel free to contact Michael Miller, AMEA Conference Exhibits Chair, at He will respond immediately and many times you can have more influence with an exhibitor that you do business with than he can. It would only help all of us. All it takes is a phone call to them and a little planning. Your help and encouragement make it better for everyone in attendance! Contributed by Michael Miller.

Has your Booster Group joined the registry yet?

AMEA is looking at creating some special events related to statewide advocacy for music education. We want your Music Booster/Advocacy groups to be the best they can be for you! The first step to this process is to collect contact information for music booster and advocacy groups across the state. Please help us by directing your boosters to the AMEA website to join our Music Booster/Advocacy Group Registry. We would like to have this information no later than December 1 if possible. If your school's PTO organization would like to be involved in these events, please share with them as well. Contact information will not be shared outside of AMEA.
