classroom spelling bee winners

Congratulations to our classroom spelling bee winners! Each 6th and 7th grade ELA class crowned a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner, 8th grade ELA classes crowned 1st and 2nd place winners. The 1st place winners are automatically entered into the school-wide spelling bee, which will be held after morning meeting at 8:15 on Wednesday, February 10th. 2nd place and 3rd place winners are possible alternates in the event of illness. Parents are invited to attend our school-wide spelling bee.

Inclement Weather Make-up Day

It was so nice to sleep in Friday, January 22nd! Since we took an inclement weather day, we will need to make up that school day. Anderson 5 has declared that we will make up the day on Friday, March 25th. Please adjust your calendars.

IGP's for 8th Grade Students & Parents

Individualized Graduation Plan meetings are very important for 8th grade students and their parents because this is when 9th grade course requests and forms are filled out. IGPs are going on now. If you have not set up an IGP meeting for your 8th grade student, please contact Paula Doolittle to schedule your appointment.

Westside Rising 9th Grade Scheduling Meeting

Mrs. McClain, a Westside Guidance Counselor, will visit Southwood Academy of the Arts Monday, February 1st at 11:15 in the Media Center. She will meet with 8th grade students zoned for Westside and talk about signing up for the 9th grade classes. Students will need pencils during the meeting.

Magnet School Application & Information

The Magnet Application window is January 4th - February 29th. During this time, you may apply to any elementary or middle school in the district using this link. You may also fill in a form in person at the District Office located at 400 Pearman Dairy Road. Please fill in the Magnet Application form even if your rising 6th grade student plans to audition this spring.

T-Dap Immunization Required for all 7th Grade Students

It is a state requirement that all students must have received the T-Dap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis) immunization before the start of 7th grade. When your 6th grader sees a doctor this year, please be aware that all students MUST have the T-Dap vaccine BEFORE they start school in the fall. In-coming 7th grade students will NOT receive a schedule or be able to go to class without an updated immunization record. When your child's shots are up to date, please send in a copy of his or her immunization record as soon as possible. For more information, please email our school nurse, Robin Rosa.

2016 ELA & Math After-School Tutoring

Students will be invited to join ELA or math tutoring if they are in need of extra practice or assistance. If you would like your student to be part of after-school tutoring, please contact your student's teacher.

ELA tutoring will be on the following Mondays: February 1st, February 8th, February 22nd, February 29th, March 7th, March 14th, March 21st, April 4th, April 11th, April 18th, and April 25th.

Math tutoring will be on the following Thursdays: February 4th, February 11th, February 18th, February 25th, March 3rd, March 10th, March 17th, April 7th, and April 14th.

ELA and Math tutoring is 3:15-4:15 pm; prompt pick up is greatly appreciated!

Auditions for New Students

Auditions for rising 6th grade students new to Southwood Academy will be held January 20th-February 4th and will be at the elementary schools. Students in grades 6-8 who would like to audition for Southwood Academy, may do so during the open audition Thursday, February 4th at Southwood Academy. For more information, contact Mr. Smith.

Southwood Academy's Parent Cafe

Enjoy lemonade, cookies, and conversation! Parents, grandparents, and guardians are welcome to join a conversation about the joys and challenges associated with parenting middle school students. The Parent Cafe will be hosted by guidance counselor Paula Doolittle and will be held Thursday afternoons 2-3 pm in the cafeteria February 4th, February 11th, February 18th, and February 25th. Space will be limited, so please contact Paula Doolittle to register. You may also download and fill in the registration form below.

PTO Movie Night

At the end of Southwood Academy's spirit week, the PTO is sponsoring a movie night! It will be Friday, February 5th at 6:00 pm. During spirit week, students will have a chance to vote for the movie. Pizza, drinks, and snacks will be available for sale during the event. Bring your blankets, pillows, lawn chairs, and enjoy the film! If you would like to preorder a family meal of a large pizza, 4 drinks, and 4 bags of popcorn for $15, download the order form below! Orders are due February 4th!

High School Spring Sports Begin

If you are a 7th or 8th grade student who wants to participate in a high school spring sport not mentioned above, all spring sport practices begin February 1st. You must have a physical on file to participate. If you need athletic information, contact the TL Hanna HS or Westside HS athletic office.

Celtic Fest Has Been Rescheduled

Celtic Fest has been rescheduled for February 19th-20th at Calhoun Academy of the Arts Auditorium. Orchestra students from Anderson Districts 1 and 5 will be participating in the annual Celtic Fest. This is an event during which elementary, middle, and high school orchestra students learn the art of fiddlin'. Emerald Road will be in attendance at this concert, playing along with the students, as well as performing some of their songs.

Celtic Fest is a free event! Hope to see you there!

Westside Relay for Life

The Westside Relay for Life 5K will be February 13 at 8:30 am. The event will take place at Westside's practice field on Pearman Dairy Rd. and Jackson St. To register for this event, use this link. Early registration is $25 until Jan. 29th, and late registration is $30. Packet pickup and race registration will take place Friday, February 12th 4:30-6:30 in the Westside commons area.

PTO Spring Fling

Mark your calendars for the Southwood Academy Spring Fling Saturday, April 23rd 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. More information will be available this spring. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Lagena Fant.
