The Winter Guard season begins in earnest this week with rehearsals on Tuesday and Friday. We can't wait to see the show begin to come together for their first performance in January!
Pit Orchestra for the theatre department's production of Sweeney Todd will rehearse again this week on Tuesday from 2:45 - 5 PM in the Band room.
Saturday, 12/3, the SOTW will put on the marching band uniforms one last time this school year and will get the chance to perform in two parades for our community! In the morning, we will march in the Winter Park "Ye Olde Hometown" Christmas Parade down Park Ave., and in the evening we will march in the Baldwin Park Winter Wonderland Extravaganza Parade on New Broad St. For both of these parades, the students will wear "festive headgear" of their choice - Santa hats, elf hats, yarmulke, etc. Students are also encouraged to wear festive necklaces, battery operated lights, and decorate their instruments (without damaging them, of course) for both parades. If you have questions, ask a section leader. Mr. Clemente has final approval on all headgear and decorations.
Best of luck to our students traveling to FSU and USF this weekend to perform at their honor band festivals!
Tri-State (FSU)
- Curtis Culhane
Festival of Winds (USF)
- Gabrielle Batas
- Henry Fu
- Madelyn Kerst

We're all excited to get our community back together next Thursday, December 8 for the annual Winter Band Concert at 7 PM. Please see Mrs. Adkinson's section below for details about our cookie reception in the lobby after the performance.
It's Solo & Ensemble MPA Registration Time! Please see the S&E MPA Section below for details. Registrations are due no later than Monday, 12/5.
One last note directed at the Orchestra Winds & Percussion. Mrs. Bitters and Mr. Parrish have added a Park Philharmonic rehearsal after school on Tuesday, December 6 from 2:30 - 4 PM in the Band room. Please adjust your schedules accordingly.
Looking forward to finishing out the semester strong!
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson
Happy Belated Thanksgiving, Band Families!
Hope you’ve had a great week, complete with a whole week of “school vacation” … much needed at our house, for sure.
Congratulations to our band students for performing just one. Last. Time. At the Wildcats’ last playoff game of the season! Great job on a great season, SOTW!
Although Football season and Stand Tune Season is officially over, we have one more uniformed day of band THIS SATURDAY .. with two holiday parades. Thanks a million, to the parents who have signed up to chaperone for these two events. Looks like our chaperone roster is about full! A Holiday Hooray!!
As holiday season begins, we celebrate with the band’s Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 8th. This year, we’re bringing back our post-concert reception in the lobby… a wonderful way to celebrate the season and mark the halfway point of the school year. We’ll serve cookies and punch, and you guessed it .. we’ll need cookies for the “cookie” part! We’re asking each family to bring a plate of cookies, brownies or whatever your favorite holiday dessert is (as long as it doesn’t require a fork to eat it!) when you arrive for the concert that evening.
One last thing, we’re putting together a committee of parents to solicit major donors for the band’s trip to New York and its performance at Carnegie Hall. That meeting will be on Monday, December 5 at 7 pm in the band room .. if your child is going on the June trip and you are able to help with this herculean effort, please plan to attend … watch your email for more details this week.
So thankful this Thanksgiving for this fabulous group of parents, students and teachers and all the adventures experienced and lessons learned through the band program. Have a great week as we prep for the holidays!

Butter Braid Fundraiser Wrap-up
Hello all! Thank you so much for your efficiency with the Butter Braid orders. It was so smooth and easy for Kim and I to compile the orders this time. We exceeded our order from last year, which was 326. This year was 511! Awesome work! Credits will be applied to your account within the week. Next week, we will go over delivery day which is Dec 14th. Have a great week!

SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA
As we continue into the 2nd marking period of the school year, it's time to begin finalizing selections for the annual Solo and Ensemble MPA. As a reminder from our Band Handbook, Solo and Ensemble is a part of our 2nd - 3rd quarter project for all students in the Winter Park Band - wind players, percussionists, and color guard. This project allows our students to have a performance opportunity where they are able to showcase their individual musicianship and take what they are learning in their Band classes and apply it toward a piece of music of their own choosing. It is my firm belief that preparing a piece for performance either individually or in a small group is one of the most effective ways for our students to add to their musicianship. Students' work performing solos and multiple events for Solo & Ensemble MPA is also taken into consideration with ensemble auditions for the upcoming school year. As the saying goes, a rising tide raises all boats, and when all students work to improve their individual musicianship, the Band program benefits as a whole.
Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:
- Option 1: Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year Horizon HS on February 10 and 11. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. The Band program pays for the event registration for all participating students.
- Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, February 5, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente. Ms. Young would adjudicate color guard solos.
The next step is choosing which option you prefer and what piece(s) you will perform. Start looking at solo literature, consult your private lesson teacher, and/or get your chamber ensemble together and committed to performing as a group. Once you are prepared to register for either Solo and Ensemble MPA or the Solo and Ensemble Recital Option, follow the links below. If a student chooses to play a solo, they are responsible for providing a piano accompanist. If you are in search of an accompanist, please consult this list of piano accompanists on the Band website.

Solo and Ensemble MPA Registration
- Due no later than Monday, 12/5/22
Solo and Ensemble Recital Option Sign-up
- Due no later than Monday 12/5/22
Students should have a close, if not final idea of what they would like to perform at Solo & Ensemble now after the Thanksgiving break. If a student plans on performing a solo that has piano accompaniment, that student should secure an accompanist before we leave for Winter Break.
