The Industrial Revolution
The advantages of the Industrial Revolution
The Pros and the Cons
The effect of the Industrial Revolution changed the course of America. The world is how it is today because of the Industrial Revolution, but it came with two sides; the pros and the cons. While there are many cons to the Industrial Revolution, such as child labor, terrible working conditions, and long working hours, the pros of the Industrial Revolution outweigh the cons because the Industrial Revolution created many inventions, made advancements in transportation, and developed mass production.
Inventions
One pro to the Industrial Revolution was that it produced many inventions that made our lives easier. Some of the inventions were the Cotton Gin, sewing machine, telegraph, steam engine, Mechanical Reaper and many more. The telegraph was one of the most important inventions at it’s time. Before the telegraph, it took weeks or even months for messages to reach different states. The telegraph revolutionized communication because things that took weeks and months now happened almost instantaneously.
Transportation Advancements
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, transportation was slow and undeveloped. The Industrial Revolution’s transportation advancements made it much safer and more efficient. Railroads were the most significant advancement of the Industrial Revolution. Railroads could span from 3,000 to 30,000 miles long, carrying heavy loads of goods, or even passengers. Shipping costs greatly decreases and industry expanded.
Mass Production
The Industrial Revolution didn’t just produce inventions though. Without a long tradition of doing things, America experimented with new methods and mass production was one of those experiments. Mass production is the production of large amounts of one product, mostly on assembly lines. It allowed more people to move from their farms into the cities and thus it improved the U.S. economy and the lives of the people. Mass production also created many job opportunities, which was another factor in improving people's lives and the economy.
