Library News
What a fabulous year we have had in the library! Most recently, we held a Spring Book Fair with Southwest Books. The feedback from students, teachers and parents was phenomenal - everyone loved the selection of books (and no 'junk'!). A big thank you to Kara French and her team of volunteers for making sure everything ran smoothly. All profits will be spent entirely on books for the 2015-16 school year.
Summer Reading - Students have access to Hamilton's eBooks for most of the summer. Simply go to the district website, PARENTS & STUDENTS / LIBRARY RESOURCES / CLICK TO VISIT LIBRARY / HAMILTON ELEMENTARY. Students will need to log in with their s# and the password used at school. If your child doesn't know his or her password, contact the teacher. Click on the CATALOG tab, change 'material type' to EBOOK, and hit enter. If you have problems or questions, email jennifer.lucas@cfisd.net - I will be checking email periodically throughout the summer.
Also in the Lions Lines are Recommended Reading Lists for next year, the official Name That Book list for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, and the Harris County Public Library's summer calendar and special event descriptions - enjoy!
Our second year of the BAK-PAK (Books And Kids - Power And Knowledge) has wrapped up and we truly appreciate the hours Emily Sausley and her great Dane, Sadie, spent working with our second graders. They bring a smile to our faces the moment they walk in the building!
Finally, an enormous THANK YOU to the library volunteers that come in every single week to assist with your child's checkout, shelving books and other miscellaneous tasks. Because of these #AWESOME people, we have an #AWESOME library: Amy Fink, Nita Patel, Valerie Arnold, Rob James, Krish Gundu, Rebecca Parker, Roxie Goetz, and Lindy LeCompte (Volunteer Coordinator).

Credit by Exam
Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact the school counselor, Michelle Erickson, by June 1 to register. Summer testing for the 2015-2016 school year will take place on June 16, 2015.
Message to 5th Grade Parents
Information about Level-1 classes for 6th grade:
Level-1 classes are designed to challenge students beyond grade-level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. They are more rigorous and have an more in-depth content focus than on-level classes. Level-1 classes often move at a faster pace, include different types of assignments, including additional outside reading, and may require more independent study skills.
Students are eligible for Level-1 classes in 6th grade (2015-2016 school year) if during their 5th grade year:
1. The student earns a yearly average of 85+ in the on-level class in the same subject level;
or
2. The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Reading test. This makes the student eligible for the Level-1 Language Arts/Reading block and Social Studies; or
3. The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Science. This makes the student eligible for Level-1 Science;
and
4. The student has parent permission to enroll in
Level-1 class.
Students who provisionally qualified for any Level-1 class(es) at the end of the 3rd nine weeks, received the Level-1 letter on Wednesday, April 8. If you and your child have made the decision to participate in any Level-1 subject area, you must sign the form and return it to Michelle Erickson before that placement can made.
***Please note that it is the final end-of-year average that qualifies your child for any individual Level-1 subject. If your child provisionally qualified in the 3rd nine weeks for a subject(s) area, and that subject drops below the 85 average, your child will no longer qualify for Level-1 in that subject area. On the other hand, if your child’s final average for a specific subject meets the requirement for Level-1, but it did not meet it at the 3rd nine week period, you will be receiving a Level-1 letter for that particular course that your child now qualifies for. You will need to sign that new letter and return it to Michelle Erickson in order for that final placement to be input for your child’s next year’s schedule.

In addition, I would also like to give a special thank you to Jeff and Erin Carlyle for all of their support and assistance with running the program this year.
