October 2022 Newsletter
News from SHES Principal!
Welcome October!! Welcome Fall!
October is a busy month for us at SHES! The first grading period is quickly coming to a close (Friday, October 14th) and I would like to encourage all parents to visit your child’s FOCUS page to ensure that you are aware of your child’s current academic performance as it relates not only to English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, but to Art, Music and PE as well. If your child is missing assignments or not performing at grade level for any content area, communication with the teacher is vital. Our teachers have been diligent in making phone calls, sending e-mails and scheduling conferences to ensure that parents are aware of current performance and suggestions on how to improve or excel. Parents are every child’s first teacher! Please reach out if you have any questions or if your child is struggling.
October is a busy month for awareness as well! This month is National Bullying Prevention and Awareness Month. This national campaign encourages action to prevent bullying in schools, communities and online. Sometimes there is confusion between conflict and bullying. Conflict is a normal part of life, whereas bullying is a harmful form of peer abuse. Conflict is generally not a repeated behavior, and there is a relatively equal balance of power between those involved. Bullying would be identified with the following criteria:
1. There is always a power differential between the bully and the victim that is acquired through physical size, strength or status.
2. There is intent to harm; the child who is bullied is put in the position of oppression by the child who bullies.
3. Finally, bullying is a repeated rather than singular event.
Adults can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it and teaching strategies on how to stand up to it safely. Also consider, “what role is my child playing in this conflict and/or bullying?” If bullying is suspected, visit our district website to report incidences or to seek additional resources. https://www.pcsb.org/Page/3639 You can also discuss with your child preventative steps our school uses to support PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) such as morning class meetings, Sanford Harmony Curriculum and following our school wide Guidelines for Success – Safety First at Safety Harbor, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Ready to Learn!
October is also recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎗. Breast Cancer continues to impact the lives of many, including members of our SHES Sea Turtle family and community. Please keep all those impacted in your thoughts and wear PINK on Wednesdays for the month of October to raise awareness!
Finally, parents, please join me in congratulating Mrs. Julie Halstead, 1st grade teacher, who is our SHES 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year! Congratulations also to Ms. Emilia Charris, our Support Employee of the Year. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Our office number is 727-724-1462 or feel free to e-mail me directly.

K-KIDS is off to a great start. We have met twice in the month of September to kick off our club.
We met our members and have become acquainted with one another and our Kiwanis Leader of the Year of Safety Harbor, Janine Brown. We are so honored to have her help and guidance.
We were together to hold elections this month and we were all so impressed with the speeches of those running for office. All the candidates were so brave and sincere. Congratulations to all of those who ran for office, and thank you for taking the opportunity. We will need the leadership of all of you this year.

Student of the Month - September
Kiwanis' Student of the month- Todd Wright
“Todd Wright was chosen for this award for his remarkable attitude and kindness. Todd is one of those students at PE, that is joy to have in our class. He always tries his best, encourages his classmates, but most of all, he is resilient and does not let the little things get in his way. Some of Todd’s classmates may moan and groan about what team they are put on, or a foul that was or was not called, but not Todd. I often hear Todd say to his teammates when they do these things, “let’s just play”. But my favorite Todd moment happened just a week ago, after I had actually selected him for this award. We were doing a running long jump competition, and Todd had set the record for his class with a 10 foot jump, he was very excited to say the least. Just 2 minutes later though, one of his friends broke his record by just a few inches. Instead of being let down or frustrated, Todd immediately started celebrating with his buddy, jumping up and down, and slapping fives. Todd is an excellent student to have, and an even better person, I only see a bright future for this young man. I am honored to present him the Kiwanis student of the month award.”

Volunteer Corner
Don't forget to log ALL of your hours!
Logging and tracking volunteer hours allows for a truer picture of what programs actually cost. Business partners/donors want to know the real value of our programs, and underestimating the impact of volunteers undervalues the program. Thorough volunteer tracking systems also allow us to gain a better understanding of how much volunteers COST and CONTRIBUTE to the event. This allows us to define clear current needs and requirements. Lastly, the community, potential families choosing our school and other volunteers take note of the strength of the volunteer program (number of hours) as an indicator of credibility and belief in the school.
LUNCH PAL MENTORS NEEDED!
Change the life of student! Meet with a student once a week during their lunch!
That is all it takes! Please contact the front office for details! :)
We are high need of MALE mentors!
SHES PTA News
October is full of PTA events. On October 12th, SHES will Walk Safely to School. We meet at the gazebo at 7:50 am and will walk together to school led by SHES student safety patrols and a City of Safety Harbor Fire Truck. Please join us.
Fall Fest is PTA’s biggest event of the year and you’ll want to attend! We are so excited to host this event after two years of going without. On Friday night, October 28th from 5:00-7:30 pm, SHES PTA will have bounce houses, carnival games, the pumpkin decorating contest, PE’s Jail and Bail, and much more, all on the SHES campus! This is a fun and affordable event for you and your family - $5 wristbands will go on sale soon before and after school. Its all hands on deck and we need a ton of volunteers monitor bounce houses, sell drinks, and of course set up and clean up. Please make sure you a registered volunteer so you can help us make this event fabulous for your child.
We are also looking for donations to make this event a success – carnival game prizes, small Little Debbie type cakes (for the cake walk), non-melting candy, canned soda, and bottled water can all be sent in. Please stay on the lookout for BOGO and other deals on these items. You can send items in with your child and mark them “PTA Fall Fest” or drop them by the front office. Business sponsorships for Fall Fest are available through PTA’s school store at https://shes-pta.memberhub.com/store. Please consider sponsoring a game on behalf of your family or ask your company if they would consider sponsoring this great school event. These are fabulous ways to support your school if you don’t have the time to volunteer. Thank you in advance!
School t-shirt orders should be going home with students in the new few days. T-shirts and merchandise is a big undertaking. If you’d like to help with ordering or sorting, please reach out to us.
PTA is looking for a hospitality chair (or team) to organize staff luncheons and the meal portion of PTA family events. If you’re good at ordering food and like feeding the community, please consider helping on the hospitality committee (its only about 3-4 times a year). Email us at shespta1@gmail.com for more information.

Valerie Brown

Notes from Nurse Jen!
Head Lice
Head lice are most common in preschool and elementary school-aged children. Each year millions of school-aged children in the United States get head lice. Head lice are found worldwide, and anyone can get it.
Head lice are tiny bugs roughly the size of a sesame seed. They are usually pale and gray in color, but their colors may vary. They feed on small amounts of blood on the scalp and can live up to two days without a blood meal.
Head lice live for about 28 days. They develop in 3 phases: egg (nit), nymph, and adult louse.
1. Egg or nit. Eggs or nits hatch in 6 to 9 days. Eggs are usually found within 4 to 6 mm of the scalp and do not survive if they are farther away.
2. Nymph. The nymph looks like an adult head louse but is much smaller (about the size of a pinhead [1.5 mm]). Nymphs become adults about 7 days after hatching.
3. Adult. An adult louse can multiply fast and lay up to 10 eggs a day. It takes only about 12 to 14 days for newly hatched eggs to reach adulthood.
This cycle can repeat itself every 3 weeks if head lice are left untreated.
Regular checks for head lice are a good way to catch head lice early and avoid infestation. Below is a list of how you can check your child’s hair.
· Seat your child in a brightly lit room.
· Part the hair.
· Look for crawling lice and for nits on your child's scalp a section at a time.
· Live lice are hard to find. They avoid light and move quickly.
· Nits will look like small white or yellow-brown specks and be firmly attached to the hair near the scalp. The easiest place to find them is at the hairline at the back of the neck or behind the ears. Nits can be confused with many other things such as dandruff, dirt particles, or hair spray droplets. The way to tell the difference is that nits are firmly attached to hair, while dandruff, dirt, or other particles are not.
Use a fine-tooth comb to help you search the scalp section by section.
*Always check with your child's doctor before beginning any head lice treatment such as medicated lice shampoos.
Other things to remember when treating head lice:
· Wash your child’s clothes, bed linens, towels, hats and backpack in hot water and dry on high heat if they were used within two days of finding head lice.
· DO NOT spray pesticides in your home. They expose you and your family to dangerous chemicals and are not needed to treat head lice.
· Anyone who has come in close contact should be checked and treated when necessary.
