This month marks the halfway point in the year! As the second quarter ends, students are beginning the sixth reading module out of 10 for the year. Below are descriptions for each grade level. As always, don’t forget to check out our website for more parent resources and information: For Students - Lansdowne Elementary (bcps.org)
Pre-K: Dear Families, This month, pre-k is beginning our new unit, "How Structures Are Built." We will explore the form and function of materials and, in the last weeks of the unit, make a toy for ourselves and one to share. Throughout the unit, we will continue to practice early reading skills, such as rhyming and individual sounds in words, as well as learning about the letters Ff, Gf, Nn, and Pp. We will learn about sequencing in order to explain a process so that we can write our own directions about how to make or do something. From, Ms. Shaw
Kindergarten: In this module, students will explore the reasons we celebrate our country. They will explore our different landscapes, unique symbols, diverse people, and learn that we all contribute to making the United States special.
First Grade: In this module, students will examine the purposes for celebrating patriotic holidays and symbols. They will explore why people sing patriotic songs. In addition, they learn about a variety of patriotic topics, including monuments, the Liberty Bell and other U.S. symbols, and the nation’s presidents.
Second Grade: In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that will help them learn how weather changes from day to day and from season to season. They will explore types of weather they may experience quite often or may never experience-such as blizzards or hurricanes. Children will learn to notice how the weather affects them and their communities.
Third Grade: In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that present them with information about animal survival. They will learn more about the way animals utilize behaviors and characteristics, or traits, to help them survive.
Fourth Grade: In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts that present them with information about Earth’s natural wonders. They will learn that our world is full of unique places with amazing wonders on land, in the ocean, and in the sky.
Fifth Grade: In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that present them with information about how people create and share different art forms. They will learn about the powerful impact of various art forms.

WIDA Testing
Our WIDA testing window is now open from January 8th through March 1st! WIDA stands for World-class Instructional Design and Assessment. WIDA is an English language proficiency assessment. WIDA is taken by student K-12 that are English Language Learners receiving ESOL services in Baltimore County Public schools. This assessment allows schools to appropriately place students for instruction as well as helps support teachers in planning day to day.
You may be asking yourself how you can prepare your student for WIDA testing.
1. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before testing.
2. Make sure your student has a good breakfast, whether at school or at home.
3. Encourage your students to do their best!
From January 22nd to February 24th, students in grades K-5 will be completing their MAP Growth Assessments. The MAP Growth Assessment is the most trusted and innovative assessment for measuring achievement and growth in Kindergarten-12th grade English Language Arts and Reading. This assessment provides teachers with accurate, actionable evidence to help inform instructional strategies regardless of where students are academically. Students will work hard to complete both assessments and our K-2 students will take it one final time in May to track the growth made by the conclusion of the school year.
Mensaje de la Sra. Phillips, nuestra maestra de desarrollo personal
Pruebas WIDA

4th and 5th Grade Principal Advisory Board
We had our first Principal Advisory Board meeting this month. Students focused on giving themselves and others positive affirmations. They were also asked the question, "How do you feel heard and valued at school?" Some answers were, "When teachers care about my feelings." "When people look at me when they are talking with me." "When teachers help me with the answers I am not sure about." We will continually share student feedback with staff.

Meal Update
Dear Team BCPS,
We are pleased to provide an update on our plans for student meal service for the 2023-2024 school year. BCPS will adopt a systemwide Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) model for the 2023-2024 school year and will provide free breakfast and lunch meals to all students. BCPS families will no longer be required to complete meal applications to determine eligibility. Healthy meals are a vital part of the learning process and students will have access to a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables, bento boxes and salads, and much more throughout the school year.
The BCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services looks forward to providing nutritious meals in a supportive environment for all BCPS students.
