Prestons Post
Term 2, Week 5
Principal's Message
Welcome to our Week 5 newsletter. Our students and teachers have been working hard and there has been lots of learning and fun at school this week.
Biggest Morning Tea
Our wonderful student parliament ran a cake stall this morning to raise funds for Cancer Council Research. Our wonderful community raised $906 this morning and are hoping to hit the $1000 mark by selling left over cakes after school today. What a wonderful effort from our whole school community.
School Photos
Our students looked amazing yesterday for school photos. It was lovely to see everyone in their full school uniform looking proud to be a part of Prestons. Please continue to send your child to school in their full school uniform each day.
Student Bathrooms
This is an important message to all of our families and friends. The student toilets at school are strictly for student use only. For safety, families and friends are not permitted to use the student toilets. Thank you for supporting this important child protection matter.
National Sorry Day
Today is National Sorry Day – a day to acknowledge the trauma experienced by survivors of the Stolen Generations and encourage healing within our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
It has been 25 years since the ‘Bringing them Home’ report was tabled in Federal parliament in 1997. This report detailed the investigation into the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities. For many, this was the first time these stories were told and acknowledged, the first in many steps towards healing and reconciliation.
Today, let’s take the time to remember the past policies of forced removal of children and reflect on the experiences of the survivors of the Stolen Generation. Let’s also reflect on the resilience, generosity and contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our society and culture.
Next week is National Reconciliation Week (NRW) and this year’s theme, ‘Be a Voice for Generations’ urges all Australians to use their power, words and vote to create a better Australia for everyone. We’re marking the week with many whole school and class events next week.
Student Ambassador Launch
Mrs Mitchell proudly joined Naomi, our Student Ambassador at the official launch day this week. Naomi was a wonderful ambassador for our school and we are looking forward to hearing all about her special project that she will be working on to help make our school a better place. Well done Naomi we are very proud of you.
Thanks for a wonderful week of learning, don't forget to ask your child/ren what they are learning at school.

Classroom Chat with 1 Flamingos
1 Flamingos have been working extremely hard this term and have had lots of fun while doing so. We have been learning to persevere through challenges that may come our way and Mrs Quinn is very impressed with our efforts.
In Literacy, we have been learning to create quality compound sentences and to reread our writing to ensure it makes sense. The Flamingos have also been learning about digraphs and vowel graphemes in Phonics.
In Maths, we have been working on recalling our number combinations to ten, twenty and even to thirty. The Flamingos are becoming doubles experts which is helping to solve tricky number problems. We have been learning to order a range of two-digit numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest.
The Flamingos have created beautiful sunflower artworks to help brighten our classroom. We used a variety of art supplies to create our stunning art display within our classroom.
We enjoyed our Fire Truck visit last Friday where we learned about fire safety and the equipment used to help put out a fire. The Flamingos learned how to stop, drop and roll and why we have fire alarms in our homes, schools and buildings. Nito was even lucky enough to help hold a piece of equipment to see how heavy it is for the firefighters. We loved our Fire Truck visit.

Classroom Chat with 3/4 Seahorses
3/4 Seahorses have thoroughly enjoyed exploring and engaging in hands-on learning experiences over the past couple of weeks during mathematics lessons involving length. Students have investigated how to measure a range of objects while flexibly converting between units of measurement, such as: m, cm and mm.
These activities have assisted students in successfully estimating, comparing, ordering and recording the length of a variety of objects. We are excited to keep exploring and building our mathematical skills in future lessons!
Spotlight on Learning
Today 6 Magpies and K Koalas completed a STEM experiment where they had to build a tower using only pasta and marshmallows. They had a great time and even had marshmallows afterwards!
Sentral Parent App
Our school has made the decision to change the way we communicate with parents.
Sentral, the schools School Management System has a Parent communications app. We are now using this Parent Application.
You are able to do the following:
* receive real-time notifications and messages from the school or your child’s classroom teacher.
* view academic reports
* submit student absences
* view calendar events
* book parent/teacher interviews
* view school information and permission notes
* receive sick bay notifications
* view newsletters
Please download the Sentral for Parent App (via the App store or Google Play store) Search: Prestons Public School.
information on how to download the application is attached.
We require all families to register for the Sentral for Parents app as we have stopped using other communication apps such as Skoolbag and Sentral for Parents will be a one stop shop for all communications.
Please be patient with the school staff as we work through any teething problems and adjust to the new system.
You should have received a paper notice and email with your child’s ‘access key’ listed on it which will allow you direct access to your child’s profile.
If you have questions about using the app, or need some extra help then please browse the list of FAQs at https://info.sentral.com.au/new-app-getting-started or contact us for assistance.
