DHS Science Fair 2017
Competition and winners announced on February 21, 2017
Congratulations to FIRST PLACE WINNER, Hannah Gravante
Hannah's project entitled "The Science Behind Making Ice Cream" questioned how the Law of Thermodynamics allows us to make delicious food and de-ice our roads in the winter. Hannah will participate in the Coriell Science Fair in March. Good luck, Hannah!
Nice job, SECOND PLACE WINNER, Justin Ma
Justin's project entitled "How Does Heat Affect Proteins?" investigated the denaturing of proteins during the process of cooking (hair, milk and eggs). Justin certainly has many ideas for continuing his research using other techniques like changing pH. Justin will be showing off his work at Coriell Science Fair as well. Break a leg, Justin!
Fun idea, THIRD PLACE WINNER, Sera Lukens!
Sera's project investigated how the gel electrophoresis technique could be used to separate the molecules of food dye. Sera's interest in forensics and laboratory techniques are something she'd like to pursue.
Cool techniques, Honorable Mention Winner, Kesan Ucheya
Kesan's use of crystallization techniques using alums allowed him to grow some amazing crystals. Kesan's interest in natural phenomena around him inspired him to do this investigation. Keep it up Kesan!
Thank you, Ms. Brewster, Science Fair Advisor
Fall 2017 will be an opportunity for all DHS students to work alongside Ms. Brewster in a new course offering, Research in Science. Imagine the possibilities of learning how to read, write and research science investigations for class credit?
What's next for our aspiring scientists?
Hannah and Justin will be attending the Coriell Science Fair on March 17th-18th at the Camden County Community College in Blackwood, NJ. Those who place at Coriell may move on to the Delaware Valley Regional Science Fair, April 4th-6th.
