The PTO is excited to be hosting Bingo Night on Thursday, March 15th.
Last year, the night was a huge success and a very fun family event! One portion of the evening that the families seemed to really enjoy was the many items being raffled by local restaurants, shops, and/or companies. If you or your company/organization has an item(s) that you would be willing to donate to the bingo event, please contact Rhona Harvey at harveyr@usd385.org or bring the item to the office. This night is not a fundraiser; therefore, any items donated will be directly to Meadowlark students and/or families
BOUQUET DELIVERIES
We discourage the delivery of flowers, balloons, and cookie bouquets to the school. The bouquets are difficult for students to transport home and often interfere with classroom instruction. If bouquets are delivered to school, they are held in the office until the end of the school day. Parents may be asked to transport the bouquets home if deemed necessary. Bouquets in glass containers and large balloons will not be allowed on the school bus.
Dear Parents and Families:
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: 3/1 to 3/8
Shopping hours: 9am to 3:30pm
Book Fair, Art Show and Academic Showcase Night: 3/1 3:30pm-8:00pm
If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at: http://www.scholastic.com/bf/meadowlarkelemsch2. Our Online Fair is available from 2/24/18 to 3/9/18.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

5TH GRADE VALENTINE KINDNESS PROJECT
Miss Hoopes class wanted to take the Prairie Creek 5th Grader's Kindness Challenge and fill Valentine Boxes for children who are in the hospital and won't be able to attend a Valentine Party. They have received many items, but could use more. They hope to fill 45 boxes (15 per 5th grade class) on Valentine's Day which will then be split between Wesley Children's Hospital and Wichita's Littlest Heroes. The kids are super excited for this project and came up with a list of items they are still needing by Tuesday, February 13th.
Suggested Items:
Valentine Pencils, erasers, bookmarks, etc
Chapsticks
Hats or Beanies (Like ball caps or crocheted beanies)
Valentine Cards (example multipack cards for class without candy that the students will sign at school as part of this project)
Treats in individual pack size: crackers, pretzels, etc...
Coloring Books and Crayons
Art Supplies (Stickers, Markers, stencils, colored pencils, small sketchbook, etc.)
Play Dough
Small Games, small puzzles, travel games, Rubik cubes, fidget spinners, etc...
Little stuffed animals or ball (like Nerf balls)
Gift Cards: McDonalds, Gas Cards, Walmart (it was suggested that we get brands that are national because at times they have to travel out of state to receive care)
Cash donations excepted
Fuzzy Socks/Gripper Socks
NATIONAL DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
We are very pleased to have Aaron Huslig, DDS here on Thursday, February 15th to provide a general dental screening to all the students at Meadowlark. All findings will be sent home with your child.
National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) began as a one day event in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3, 1941. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children's Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single day observance became a week-long event in 1955. In 1981, the program was extended to a month-long observance we know today as National Children's Dental Health Month.
Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
ART NEWS
We have started 2018 with lots of creativity! Many students are embracing our new medium of cardboard! It is such a great tool for our 3D thinkers! Through exploring their own subject matter, students are able to generate their own ideas for artwork and work through the creative process. The art room is a great environment for creativity and collaboration. It is through learning conversations that we can improve on our ideas! Looking forward to a creative 2018!
SPELLING BEE
The annual Meadowlark Elementary Spelling Bee took place on Thursday, January 18th, 2018. The 2018 winner is Megan S., a fourth grade student from Mr. Bextel’s classroom and our runner-up is, Ashley K., grade four, from Mrs. Boline’s class. There were sixteen contestants in this year’s Bee. Other contestants included: 3rd Grade – Cora F., Addi E., Mikey H., and Bryce S. - 4th Grade – Kendall D., Emma J., Hannah C., and Presley K. - 5th Grade – Bryson P., Emilie T., Caleb B., Grant F., Chandler R., and Isabella D.
Mrs. Katherine Munson pronounced the words to the students with Mrs. Becky Hall and Mrs. Kami Gorges serving in the role of judges for the bee. Megan will be representing Meadowlark Elementary at the Butler County Spelling Bee on February 2, 2018 at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.
Congratulations to all of the spellers for a successful Spelling Bee!
P.E. NEWS
Archery
During the month of January, the 4th and 5th grade students have had the opportunity to participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) during their PE class. The NASP program promotes the international-style target archery as part of the in-school curriculum, to improve educational performance and participation in the shooting sports among students in grades 4-12. Over the 5 or 6 day unit, students were able to improve their technique. We had several that were not only able to hit the bulls eye but some were able to hit it consistently! All students who go through this program are eligible to compete in NASP tournaments. If your child is interested in continuing this sport at a competitive level, please contact me and I will be sure to pass on any tournament information to you.

1ST & 2ND GRADE MUSIC PROGRAM
The Meadowlark 1st and 2nd Graders celebrated the great State of Kansas on Tuesday, January 23rd. They sang a variety of songs and also shared some trivia facts about our home sweet home.
Meteorologist Jay Prater made a guest appearance and gave some very interesting weather information such as the hottest and coldest day ever recorded in Kansas. The students showed honor to three Universities; Wichita State, The University of Kansas and Kansas State University. They also sang our State song for Kansas, "Home on the Range."
Amber Kear organized our wonderful PTO parent helpers. We couldn't do these fun things without the support of these wonderful parents and families. Many Meadowlark students created Sunflowers and other decorations for the set design. (Thank you Mrs. Russo, in the Art Room.) The students had fun and learned so much along the way.
