NO PLACE FOR HATE: anti-Semitic materials in Ashland
Superintendent's Message
Ashland Families, Students and Community Members,
Over the holiday, we saw hate crimes and prejudice play out in news reports across the country. Unfortunately, our community is not immune from hate – some of our families, colleagues and neighbors in Ashland and elsewhere in Jackson County were targeted at their homes with plastic bags containing anti-Semitic flyers and other material. There have been no reports of these acts on any of our school or district campuses.
Intolerance and bigotry should never be accepted as part of a healthy dialogue, and it will never be accepted in our schools. It is our individual and collective responsibility to recognize hate speech in any form as an attempt to hurt and divide us. We must stand together to condemn these kinds of messages – whether they target Jewish, Palestinian or any other groups of people.
Please report any on-campus incidents regarding bias and discrimination to your school principal. Bias incidents may also be reported on-line here.
We also offer support services to students processing current world events. Please reach out to your school administrator, child development specialist, or school counselor to connect with resources for your student.
The State of Oregon Bias Response Hotline, 1-844-924-BIAS can also help you understand your options, make choices about next steps and receive support in the aftermath of experiencing or witnessing bias. If you call the Bias Response Hotline, you will be connected with trauma-informed hotline advocates who are trained in crisis intervention and can provide bias response advocacy, including assistance in reporting a bias crime to law enforcement.
I urge each of us to promptly report any suspicious behavior – if you see something, say something. The SafeOregon tip line is available 24 hours per day on-line here or by calling or texting 844-472-3367. In an emergency, dial 911 to notify Ashland Police and other first responder and law enforcement agencies.
Please treat those around you with kindness and genuine caring. We need to support each other now more than ever. Hate speech has no place in our schools, no place in our community and no place in ANY community. Having compassion for each other is among our best answers to those who wish to tear us apart. Let us work together to build a world where all children are valued, connected, and welcomed always.
With gratitude
Samuel
