Screencasting in Education
Screencasting can be used for:
- recording videos/narrating to present material to students
- tutorials - how to approach an assignment or task / walk through steps with the visual & audio aid
- differentiated instruction (by task or student level/ability)
- giving input/feedback on assignments/tasks with the visual & audio aid
- answering frequently asked questions & posting the video to the website
JING vs. Screencast-O-matic PRO
Technology Features & Affordances
Why JING is a great screencasting tool:

- Short length will not lose viewer's attention (appropriate for younger audience)
- FREE! :)
Why Screencast-O-matic PRO is great:
- Allows for unlimited recording time
- Webcam integrated easily into the videos
- Appropriate for audience who must view longer tutorials
- Not a huge sticker price- only $15 for a very useful tool!
RECOMMENDATIONS
Choosing JING or Screencast-O-matic PRO as a tool?
JING - Free, very user friendly screencasting tool , but the tools are VERY basic and there is a 5 minute maximum recording time.
- When to use: short, basic recorded videos under 5 minutes (no editing).
Screencast-O-matic PRO - Much more advanced tool for screencasting with endless recording time, but will take some time to figure out how to use & costs $15
- When to use: For more advanced, longer (if needed) recordings where can edit sound & video clip
Overall, I think that it is worth buying Screencast-O-matic PRO for $15. It will take a little bit to learn how to use the tools & editing features, but you will not be limited on time, and it is an overall better screencasting tool!
