The 4th District Math assessment of the year was last week! This assessment measures student growth on standards all year long. After the first assessment only 1 student was Proficient, after the 2nd assessment we had 5 students scoring in the Proficient range. After the 3rd assessment we had 12 students scoring Proficient or Advanced!! Way to Go! This last assessment had 8 students who scored Proficient or Advanced!! Keep up the hard work!!
We still need lots of work on multiplying and dividing larger numbers accurately! Continue to work on reviewing basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts at home. We are discovering that knowing them fluently makes our daily work so much easier. There are many apps and websites out there to help practice these facts.
Reading and Writing Workshops
Reading fluency is a major part of comprehension. The faster your child can read the words on the page, the better their comprehension of the story is.The goal for the end of the year is 160 words per minute. We are continuing to work on this at school daily. Please keep practicing at home! A way to practice at home is to set a timer (microwave) for 1 minute. Read a piece of text and mark where you're at when the timer goes off. Reset the timer and reread the same piece of text trying to get farther this time. We will be checking our progress one last time this year next week! Don't forget those glasses!!
We have been researching and writing about different environmental problems during Reading and Writing Workshops. We're getting ready to use technology to publish our findings. We're excited to wrap up the year reading different fiction books and creating book trailers to present to classmates at the end of the year.
During whole class read aloud time we read Comet's Tale by Omaha Native Steve Wolff. It's the story of how a rescued greyhound helped him to do daily routines while suffering from a very debilitating spinal disease.
Global Blogging Challenge
The first topic will be:
1 - Tell a little about yourself to give us a sense of who you are.
I can't wait to see how the kids decide to share who they are!
Science and Social Studies
During Science we've been learning about how to take care of the Earth better. This fun mining for chocolate activity helped us realize how hard it is to remove resources from the Earth without causing a lot of damage.
