MBK Youth Council Graduation - 2017 Cohort
The 2017 MBK Youth Advisory Council cohort graduated 45 high school age youth from the 5th Ward, Kashmere Gardens, and Scarborough feeder pattern on June 14, 2017. The youth engaged in a Community Health Worker curriculum, earning credit and volunteer hours toward a Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate. MBK|YAC students earned up to 30.5 hours, on a 160-hour training, from curriculum facilitated by Gateway to Care. Once the youth turn 18, they are eligible to earn remaining hours for the certificate, and seek employment as a certified Community Health Worker.
Circle of Men - Wheatley HS
The Circle of Men, a weekly group session held at Wheatley HS, has concluded operations for the school year. About 33 boys profited from the male programming. Feedback from the young men indicated that their minds had been opened to new possibilities, especially in the areas of impulse control and anger management. Although the boys did not sign a behavioral contract to improve -behavior and grades, almost all said that they self-checked counterproductive and aggressive tendencies which resulted in improved grades, behavior and attendance. This success was partially attributed to the supportive counseling by the Circle of Men. All of the adult Facilitators stated that their lives were richer and more informed about the youth culture.
MBK Houston - Youth Hub Launch
MBK-Houston is launching its youth hub at the Fifth Ward Multi-Service Center June 20th, 2017. MBK staff helped served Chick Fil A meals for the students. Sr. Counselor Tylynn Preston made custom shirts with positive quotes for the young women.
The young men held their own "C.A.R.E." Summit. Suits and ties were donated by Kappa Alpha Psi Spring/Huntsville/The Woodlands Alumni Chapter. The students also attended sessions provided by Sr. Counselor Roderick Peoples focused on professional dress and etiquette. Both events were an overwhelming success. [Video] Mayor Turner's MBK Houston ReDirect & Children of Incarcerated Parents Press Conference
The Houston Health Department’s My Brother’s Keeper Houston initiative, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department are teaming up to reduce crime, violence and recidivism.
My Brother’s Keeper Houston designed two programs tackling the challenges of reducing youth violence. The programs coincide with Mayor Sylvester Turner’s proclamation of June 2 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
MBK Houston and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office will assist children whose parents are incarcerated through case management and care coordination. The aim is to prevent them from repeating the same or similar offenses, breaking the cycle of crime, violence and incarceration in their families. Statistics show that 70 percent of children with one incarcerated parent will one day be incarcerated and are five times more likely than their peers to commit crimes.
MBK Houston, the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department and the Harris County Juvenile Justice Center will help pre and post adjudicated youth through the ReDirect Juvenile Diversion Program. ReDirect offers boys of color intensive case management, cognitive behavioral life skills training, mentoring and restorative justice practices designed to reduce recidivism.
Crime Prevention Workshop
The Houston Health Department (HHD) Director’s Office Bureau of My Brother’s Keeper Houston & Adolescent Health hosted The Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) Training workshop. The National Institute of Crime Prevention facilitated the week-long workshop June 5th through 9th at Trinity Gardens Church of Christ. The participants included HHD staff and representatives from a number of community-based organizations. The 5 training covered CPTED principles, hands-on community training, and an exam which allowed the participants to receive a Certificate of Completion (40 hours) in Basic CPTED.
Forthcoming is a Youth Enrichment CPTED Training scheduled for July 18th- July 20th. The purpose of this program is to empower youth to help reduce and hopefully prevent the levels of fear and probability of crime in neighborhoods and business areas, while developing a sense of pride and ownership in their communities. Our goal is to inspire youth to champion the effort to create and promote safe neighborhoods.
