Keynote Presentation:
Promoting Social, Emotional & Mindful Learning (SEML) in Afterschool:
Rick will share an overview of SEML as the integration of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mindfulness Education. This will include recent research, available curriculum and general strategies for implementing SEL (self-awareness/regulation, social awareness/skills and empathy) and Mindfulness Education (learning from the ‘inside out'). SEML strategies for engaging children & youth and making any activities more mindful will be shared.

ACROSS NH is pleased to announce that Rick Alleva, Ed. D., of the UNH Cooperative Extension will be our keynote speaker. Rick serves on the UNH Cooperative Extension (UNHCE) Youth & Family Team and Child, Youth & Family Resiliency area of expertise, promoting positive youth and family development efforts in partnership with other UNH faculty, local organizations, schools, afterschool programs, coalitions and communities. Rick helps to identify and address needs of youth and families, targeting outreach to those with limited resources and in greatest need. Rick provides training and technical assistance in academic enrichment and social/emotional learning topics for afterschool, school and other providers as well as parents and youth themselves. He is a certified Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor and is trained to implement the Mindful Schools curriculum with school aged youth. Rick is especially in interested in empowering young people to express their voice and take meaningful action to make a difference in their lives, and that of their community and their world.

Mindful Games
Mindful play is a great way for kids to develop focusing skills while learning to regulate their emotions and respond to situations calmly, with kindness and compassion. Explore Mindful Games from Susan Kaiser Greenland (author of The Mindful Child and Mindful Games books) and the Mindful Games activity cards she developed with Annaka Harris (author of I Wonder, as well a few of Rick’s favorites. Experience some of these fun, simple and accessible games and discuss ways that you can bring them into your day to day program as invitations, transition time and enrichment activities.

Managing the Day-to-Day Stress of Being a Leader

Acting Up! Bringing Positive Drama to Afterschool
Get ready to shine! Looking for a dramatic, entertaining, and hands-on learning experience? This workshop will explore the dramatic arts by stimulating creativity through problem solving and collaborative efforts. Participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of drama and theater in school-age programs. Working together participants will create, prepare, and perform a mini play. Brain Architecture
Come and explore games that develop the powerful role of relationships on early brain development. A Brain Architecture Game is a tabletop game experience that builds understanding of the powerful role of experiences on early brain development – what promotes it, what derails it, with what consequences for society. Since 2009, several thousand people in groups around the world have played the Brain Architecture Game, gaining a memorable, compelling perspective on the lifelong impact of early childhood experiences.

Get Your Kids Moving!
Using the CATCH Kids Club (CKC) Curriculum, this workshop will focus on teaching physical activity in your afterschool program in a smart, efficient manner and give afterschool staff the confidence they need to begin teaching physical activity on a regular basis. During the training, staff will play games and learn classroom management techniques to get kids moving and creating a lifelong love for physical activity. They will have an opportunity to use the CKC curriculum hands-on and teach the group a game or two! Participants will use the framework learned to better guide youth in the process of being healthy for a lifetime. Most importantly, we will be moving, learning, and having FUN! Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Growing Your Learning Community: Makerspaces in Afterschool
Makerspaces are areas where young people (and adults!) can come together to create, solve problems, and share ideas. In this workshop we’ll discuss how to establish and support one in your center… with a limited budget.

Child Care Licensing Update: What You Need to Know
Come to this information training session and meet with Child Care Licensing Supervisor, Terri Peck. This is the perfect opportunity to ask all those questions about the rules you always wanted answers to. Hear what changes are coming to the rules. Listen to how others successfully manage licensing requirements within their program. Leave with a confident and up to date understanding of licensing.

Observing and Planning for Quality STEM
As we increase our offerings for youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, we need to assess the effectiveness and value of programs across a wide range of areas. In this session, we will talk specifically about how to keep youth engaged on multiple levels, through managing participation, content, and the kinds of STEM practices we support.

What to Expect from School Agers
This session is designed to give afterschool program directors, coordinators and instructors the resources they need to build fun, innovative, and academically enriching activities that not only engage children and youth, but extend their knowledge in new ways and increase academic achievement.

Food and Fun Afterschool
Is your program looking for more creative ways to help children and families develop healthy eating and physical activity habits? In this workshop you will learn about a free curriculum developed by Harvard that incorporates lessons and activities about healthy eating and physical activity into regular after school program schedules. Food & Fun includes 11 teaching units with 70 activities to choose from throughout the calendar year that encourage healthy behaviors through active play, literacy and math skills development, creative learning, and hands-on snack time activities. Come and play some of the activities with us and learn how easy this curriculum makes it to promote healthy behaviors in your program every day! Games! Games! Games! More than Just Fun
Many of our fondest memories of families and friends take place around a table playing games. In the forefront of these memories are laughter, love and fun! However, if you look deeper into these memories you will also recognize the introduction, practice, and mastery of a variety of academic and social skills. In this workshop participants will play a variety of games that are guaranteed not only to be fun, but will also be linked to academic standards and social skills that are essential for school aged children.

Love books? Love projects? Then you will love these art projects that are based on some favorite children’s books. Together we will combine the love of literature and art, by creating some projects that will explore and extend the themes of a few well-loved children’s stories. Have you heard of Mind in the Making? Are you curious about how it can transform your life and stretch your mind? Come and experience an overview of the seven essential skills complied by Ellen Galinsky. We will have an open discussion around the purpose of a Mind in the Making. Then we will participate in some hand-on activities.

Full STEAM Ahead!
In today's ever changing and technology driven world, it is more vital than ever that we produce critical thinkers and cooperative problem solvers with academic skills in all areas of the STEAM philosophy. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore a variety of engaging STEAM challenges. The standards based activities that will be introduced may be used as a scaffold for a fun family night, as independent lessons, or as a multi-week enrichment.

Relationship Building through Board Games
Not sure what your next step is for that one student that you’re having a hard time connecting to? Don’t give up! This workshop will explore ways to build positive relationships with your students using hands-on and interactive activities. Once a strong relationship is formed we can focus on the how and why a student behaves, and how can we support them in making better choices. Gaining positive relationships can change the atmosphere of the program, the attitude of the students and staff, and make having fun a whole lot easier!

How to Calm the Angry Octopus
We will explore the insights and strategies that encourage positive behaviors in afterschool programs. Tools for providing inviting environments, in which all children's needs may be met, will be shared. Participants will experience how a thoughtfully equipped and well-designed environment can not only encourage all areas of development but have an effect on positive social interactions and behaviors.
