Learning Updates for this Month

Kindergarten: Our first month of school is underway and in Kindergarten we are learning about being a student at West Godwin. Students will be learning about our school & classroom rules and routines. Our phonics lessons are introducing students to sounds that are the same and different and learning about rhyming words. In math we are learning about sorting objects, learning about shapes, counting to 20 forwards and backwards. Students will be introduced to how we can be readers and writers by participating in daily lessons.

First Grade: This month, first graders will be building their love for and stamina with reading and writing by establishing strong reader's and writer's workshop routines. In math, we will working on counting (with popsicles...yum!), building a strong sense of numbers to ten using number racks, and adding and subtracting.

Second Grade: This month second grade is working on setting up our reading and writing routines. We are going to be doing a lot of journal writing this year. In math we are focused on adding and subtracting within 20.

EL: If your child is in the EL program at West Godwin, they will receive a blue letter that tells about the type of support they will receive at school. Please sign this blue letter and return it as soon as possible. We can't wait to start working with our EL students again!

PE: Welcome back to PE at West :) It's going to be a hot start to the year, so we want to make sure your kiddos are comfortable. Please make sure to send your child with a labeled water bottle and shoes that they can run in.

Music: Welcome to music at West! We are starting out by sharing what we love about music, songs and instruments. We are also finding (and moving to) the beat in many different songs.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, students will continue to deepen their sense of self-awareness. Kindergarten students will learn about the importance of acknowledging and appreciating diversity. 1st Grade students will continue learning about giving and receiving compliments, and how they can positively impact people. 2nd Graders will be learning about the unique skills which they possess, and the skills which others around them possess. This will help children to build their self-esteem and give them a reason to feel proud of themselves.

Practice these skills at home using the following resources: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade

Feeding America Food Truck

Feeding America food truck will be at Godwin Heights High School on Monday, October 4 starting at 4:00 PM.
