Welcome Back to School!
News This Week
Welcome back to school! You will find LOTS of information going home to start the year. Please check folders daily for items that need to be returned. I'm looking forward to a great start to first grade!
All About You Bags
You will receive an All About You bag this week. Please help your child fill it with 5 items that help explain their personality. For example, a sports fan might include a wristband or ticket stub. Please return the bags by Thursday, August 21. We will share Thursday and Friday to help get to know the class better.
Tests
We will not have tests this week. Next week, we will complete some practice tests and small items so that students can start to get the feel for taking a test. Please being talking to your child about working on their own and doing their best. Remember, this will be their first experience with "test taking" so it may take awhile for them to see the importance of working hard on their own. I try to tell them "Show What You Know!"
Reading
- Review kindergarden letters, sounds, and basic writing.
- We plan to complete letters A-L
- Learn basic workshop and group-time rules
- Practice independent reading (pictures or words)
Please review the kindergarden sight words with your child. A good understanding of those words will start them off well for first grade!
Get in the habit of reading nightly with your child. You can read to them, they can read to you, or some combination. Research shows reading one-on-one with an adult is the best way to become a reader.
Spelling
We will not have spelling this week. Next week will will have a practice list so students can experience a practice test.
Math
This week we are learning about expectations during math time. Students often work in small groups or pairs on activities. We will learn about completing the task assigned, keeping the volume reasonable, and how to treat math tools.
This week we will learn our schedule, about the calendar, explore pattern blocks, and count to 20.
Unit 1 - Now through the end of September
In Unit 1 the student will:
- Count a set of up to 20 objects
- Compare and order quantities to 20
- Combine two small quantities
- Interpret and solve addition story problems
- Find more than one combination of two addends for a number up to 10
