Hawk Squawk Newsletter 9/15/22
Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
It was so much fun opening up the building on Tuesday for Back to School Night - I loved seeing everyone and enjoyed talking to many of you. If you missed Back to School Night, one of my favorite parts of the program is student drawn portraits of teachers. Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing a few portraits and photos of our staff so you can get to know them.
Please make sure to read your child's teacher's weekly message and the Hawk Squawk to stay informed. And follow the PTO social media accounts for the latest news and updates:
- on Facebook: @hallinanhawks
- on Instagram: @hallinanpresident
Have a great evening!

Complete Required Tech Consent and Protection Program
In order for students to use school district software or any technology resources (devices, digital textbooks, etc.), there are three actions that need to be completed at the beginning of each school year:
- A parent or guardian must provide consent for each student to use District software and resources
- A Parent/Guardian and each Student must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy
- Families must choose to enroll or decline participation in the Device Damage and Loss Protection Program ($20 annual fee per student).
Please note this if for K-5th grade students only, Pre-K families do not need to complete this task.
New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System. Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements. Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.

Hello Hallinan Families!
Slice of Gratitude
Last week, we thanked our generous sponsors realtor Tessa Gold (our big water bottle sponsor), and realtor Pam Waldman (our top T-shirt sponsor).
This week we are thanking our next T-shirt tier sponsors: amazing Hallinan mom and realtor Barbara Carbone and Setter Periodontics and Dental Implants owned by Hallinan dad Dr. Michael Setter ( husband of PTO Co-President Dr. Shelby Setter)
Please check out their websites and give them a big thanks! Sponsors like these, and ALL the other ones we will be thanking, help our teachers and kids in so many ways!

Calling Potential Room Parents!
Both of us Co-Presidents were room parents last year, and we both agree, it is so hard to not sign up again this year! My favorite thing about being a room parent was getting to know the personalities of the other kids in my child's grade.
A room parent's job is to facilitate class parties and occasional communication from the PTO. Class parties include facilitating a game, a craft project, and a healthy (district-approved) snack that you have let parents know about in advance. Please reach out to us if you have any questions.
And here is the Sign-Up Genius created by our wonderful volunteer coordinator Rachel Beeson!

District Information
State Assessment Score Reports
LOSD now delivers students’ state assessment results online through ParentVUE rather than mailing paper. This is in keeping with the district’s strategic goal of sustainability and mirrors how we deliver report cards. Your child’s 2021-22 assessment reports are now available on your ParentVUE Documents page. As you review your student’s English Language Arts, math, and science scores, please keep in mind:
An achievement level of 3 or 4 is considered to be on track for the student’s grade level.
Scores on state assessments are only one measure of a student’s academic progress. We use these scores in conjunction with classroom work and other daily, weekly, monthly, and term assessments to understand your student’s strengths and areas for improvement.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you do not have a ParentVUE account, go to the ParentVUE Account Access page and click "Request Account Activation" to start the process. If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account or need assistance, please contact Lee or Linda at 503 534 2353.
Notes From Our District Nurse
Please DO NOT SEND AN ILL CHILD TO SCHOOL. This page gives examples of when your student should not be in school. If your child is ill, please contact the Hallinan Office at 503.534.2353 and leave a detailed message, or email Lee Gates - gatesl@loswego.k12.or.us and Linda Stevens - stevensl@loswego.k12.or.us
In order to keep all of our students safe, please do not plan for or send food for birthdays or other special events at school. Many students have food allergies - read more about that in the flyer below. Teachers (or the Office) must send out food notices to parents at least 3 days prior to an event, listing all foods/ingredients that will be offered at any event. Thank you for understanding.
Set Up Meal Accounts, Applications
The universal free meals waiver with USDA expired on June 30, 2022. That means starting this school year LOSD will be serving meals under the free, reduced, and paid categories. We will be using the Oregon Expanded Income Guidelines (EIG), which will help us provide free meals to more families. A family of four making $83,250 annually can now qualify fo free meals compare to the USDA standard of $36,075. For more info on how to apply for free meals families can visit this page. We have an online version or a PDF that can be used.
https://www.losdschools.org/Page/7971
Please be sure to set up your student's meal account or apply for free/reduced meals. Look for Meals under Find it Fast on district and school website homepages for account setup and application information, and more.
Fall i-Ready
This Fall, all students in Grades 1-5 will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a diagnostic assessment that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. This is the first of three i-Ready assessments we give each year. In Lake Oswego, the Fall i-Ready window is open through September 16.
