Focus on Youth: Written by Angela Schneider
MHHS students participation in a talent show at the Wilson Theatre on April 5 and April 6, 2019, which was sponsored by the DeMary Library. This was an event to display local student’s amazing talents in a variety of areas such as: dancing, singing, sculpting, and drawing.
Our outstanding students from Mrs. Hurst’s English 11A and Mrs. Schneider’s English 9A classes submitted polymer clay projects. Descriptions of each project is defined below:

Polymer Clay Rabbits: English 11A MHHS 2019-2020
The authentic artifact, the creation of an articulated polymer clay rabbit modeled after Edward Tulane, generated by the English 11A course focuses on the following areas of development:
Student engagement
STEM to STEAM design and application
Listening and revision of instructions and skills
Character development
This project revolves around the book The Miraculous of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo (2006). The book focuses on the changes in a character through life’s changes and trials. This book is also loosely based on the classical novel Orlando by Virginia Wolfe (1928), also focusing on changes throughout a plethora of lifetime experiences.
Angela Schneider:
Polymer Clay Mice: English 9A MHHS 2019-2020
Students were encouraged to create a replica of Stargirl’s pet rat to illustrate a character within the story of Stargirl. English 9A focuses on:
Creating Student-centered work
Comprehending literary text
Developing the ability to design a work of art
Experiencing a different medium
This project encompasses information from the novel by Jerry Spinelli, entitled: Stargirl (2000). The novel describes a young teen expressing herself uniquely and the narrator’s personal account of how he falls in love with Stargirl.
Furthermore, one student, Ayla Hernandez, submitted multiple pieces of her drawings and sculpting. Also, she had the courage to dance and sing on Saturday at the Wilson Theater. Thank you to everyone that submitted their projects.
