Message from Mrs. Hawkins

Lincoln Families and Friends,

The 2022-2023 School Year is off to a great start. The students and staff are happy to be back learning and meeting new friends. The focus of the first few weeks of school is really about building relationships and setting up routines that will facilitate learning throughout the school year.

We are excited to have volunteers and visitors in the building to start the year. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our office. We have many special events that happen throughout the year that could use extra hands. PTO is also collecting names for special events they are planning.

In case you are interested in visiting during lunch, we hope you will consider trying the school lunch. All visitors joining us for lunch will be able to eat with their student in the lunchroom. We are continuing the practice of having some of our classes eat in their classrooms. With the number of students (593) and classes (27) in the building, we have limited access to the lunchroom, which doubles as our gymnasium. We have also found the following advantages to this arrangement. Students can have more time to eat their meals. All students have 20 minutes of recess and at least 20 minutes for eating. Also, eating with a group of 25-30 students in a room is a calmer, more relaxing experience than the gymnasium. The number of student conflicts during lunch and recess has greatly decreased with the smaller lunch groups in the classrooms.

I hope you enjoy the beautiful fall weather and the many school and family activities that take place during this season. Information regarding Homecoming can be found in this newsletter. We hope you can join us for the parade downtown Owatonna.

Big picture

Artsonia

Our Art Teacher, Mrs. Dutton, utilizes a program called "Artsonia." If you are new to Lincoln you will be receiving an email to invite you to join. What is Artsonia?!! Artsonia is the world's largest collection of student art, published by teachers and students from around the world. Parents and family can view the art online and leave comments. In addition, parents can purchase custom art keepsakes and 20% of the sales is donated to the school arts program.

Purchasing items is completely optional, however, students love seeing their art on a mug, tumbler, postcard, magnet, notebook, etc. and these make great gifts! Mrs. Dutton is then able to use the 20% she earns from the sales to offset the cost of art supplies!

Each student's "portfolio" is kept for the remainder of their elementary years, for example, a 4th grader is able to look back at the art they made from Kindergarten all the way through 4th grade! You can also invite grandparents or other families to join--and this is all FREE! If you do not receive an email invite in the next week but would like to join, please email me with your email address and child's name and I will make sure you get an email to join! You can reach me at: jdutton@isd761.org
