Background
Bernie Sanders was born on September 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York to Eli Sanders and Dorothy Glassberg. His father was a Jewish immigrant from Poland and his mother was born into a Jewish family from New York City. He became very interested in politics at a young age after learning about Adolf Hitler and The Holocaust. Sanders attended Hebrew school and had a Bar Mitzvah in 1954. He went to James Madison High School where he was the captain of the track team. After high school he started attending Brooklyn college, and after one year he transferred to the University of Chicago. He became involved in the Civil Rights Movement and an organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality. In 1964 he graduated college with a degree in political science. In the years following college Sanders took various jobs in New York City and spent many months on a kibbutz in Israel. In 1981 Sanders won the election to become the Mayor of Burlington, along with three additional terms. In 2006 and 2012 he won elections to be the senator for Vermont. Today Bernie Sanders is running for the 2016 presidential election.
Political Ideology
Liberal
Bernie Sanders views best represent the Liberal ideology. He grew up Jewish and enjoyed it, but says he is not very religious now. He believes in gay marriage, equal rights for women, healthcare for everyone, raise minimum wage, and is pro-choice on abortions. He also wants to decriminalize marijuana and explore recreational use.

He talks about how he wants to reduce poverty, rebuilding the middle class, and remaking the health and education system.
