Winter Park High School Band Notes
July 29, 2018
FROM MR. BLACKMER
Welcome Back!
I hope that everyone had a great summer! It always goes by so quickly, but I hope that you all had a chance to recharge the batteries a little bit.
Many thanks to Maddie Skena (and her family) for serving as impromptu host to the rained-out Band Pool Party last night! It was good to hear that everyone had a great time, and I was glad to hear that there was a good showing of freshman Band students!
Maddie and the rest of the Band Council are currently working on plans for our "Family Fun Night," taking place after Band Camp this coming Friday! We'll have kick-ball, a huge water slide, and (hopefully) Jeremiah's Italian Ice! More information to come later in the week!
Band Camp begins this week, and I'd like to invite parents and alumni to drop by to watch rehearsal anytime over the next couple of weeks. We tend to spend a good portion of the first week inside (working on music), and the second week outside - either in the bus loop or at our regular rehearsal space, D-Lot.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning!
All the Best!
Mr. Blackmer
MARCHING BAND CAMP
Marching Band Camp begins tomorrow, July 30! Be sure to review the "What Do I Need for Marching Band Camp & Marching Season?" PDF on the website.
If you are new to Winter Park HS and have not yet registered for Band, please try to arrive at 8:30 AM so that paperwork can be completed before the camp begins at 9 AM.
Some quick reminders:
Drink lots of water before, during, and after camp. Have your gallon (or 1/2 gallon) water jug every day. Fill with ice and water BEFORE coming to camp.
Eat a good breakfast before coming to Band Camp. A Pop-Tart isn't going to do it!
Wear sweat-resistant sun screen.
Good idea to wear a hat outside (and sunglasses).
Appropriate athletic shoes (no sandals or boots).
LIGHT/loose-fitting clothing. Please remember elementary science principal: A black object absorbs all wavelengths of light and converts them into heat, so the object gets warm. A white object reflects all wavelengths of light, so the light is not converted into heat and the temperature of the object does not increase noticeably.
AMAZON FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY!
Even though the holiday season is past us, this is still an excellent tool to raise money for the Band every time you shop at Amazon. The Winter Park High School Alumni Band Association is a registered charity on Smile.Amazon.com, so please remember to use this unique link to shop at Amazon every time, and a small percentage of the sale (at no cost to you) will automatically be sent quarterly to the WPHSABAA account and then donated to the Winter Park Band Program. If we all use this link every time, we can raise funds on an ongoing basis to help the band! https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-0964817
