Black History Month
Binkley Families,
Black History Month begins today and is a time to celebrate the accomplishments and history of African Americans.
“Black Resistance” is this year's official theme for February's Black History Month observation, dedicated to the legacy of African American culture in America.
The origins of National History Week dates back to 1926 when Dr. Carter G. Woodson first established “Negro History Week” during his second week in February. It is thought he chose that week because it encompasses the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The movement spread during the civil rights movement, expanding to encompass the entire month. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
At school we will honor Black History month with including a significant black figure in our daily announcements. We will go in alphabetical order, starting with Aretha Franklin and ending with Zora Neale Hurston. Our library has black history focus books on display, and Mrs. Johnston has done a great job adding to our library to be more diverse in authors and subjects. And families you are always welcome to stay and join us for Monday morning assemblies at 8:35 where we go over our monthly focus, and this month we will share black history educational short videos. See below for the last video shown about inventions created by black innovators.
BE Safe. BE Responsible. BE Respectful. BE BINKLEY!
Warmly,
Harmony Harvell, Principal
