September is Attendance Awareness Month, and we are spreading the word about the importance of being in school every day!
Did you know?
* Attendance matters, as early as Kindergarten. Studies show many children who miss too many days in Kindergarten and first grade can struggle academically in later years, and often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade.
* Too many absences can affect the whole classroom, slowing down instruction.
* As a parent you are responsible for making sure your child develops the habit of regular attendance. What you can do:
Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Don’t let your child stay home from school unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to the teacher, counselor or social worker for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
Make back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent.
Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
If you are having trouble getting your child to school or are in need of services to help get your child to school regularly, please contact school social worker Sarah Welsh swelsh@wausauschools.org
