Remote Learning Update 8/24/20
Week 1 Celebration
Woo hoo! All students and their families did a terrific job during Week 1. You accessed your assignments on Google Classroom, tackled them, and submitted your work. We stayed in close contact. Keep asking questions! We'll have a terrific year!

Diagnostic Assessments This Week
Your child will be taking diagnostic assessments in Ready Math and Reading and Lexia Reading this week as part of the assigned work. In the Google Classroom, you have access to important parent information about the Ready assessments.
It's EXTREMELY important that your child complete the assessments independently. I know our first instinct is to help our children succeed. But these assessments are placement tests that will help me better understand your child's strengths and weaknesses so I can best serve your child instructionally this year.
Encourage your child to take his/her time. Work carefully. Take breaks when needed. Be sure to have paper and pencil to work out the problems on the Math Ready assessment. And sometimes the assessments are long (that's why I encourage the breaks!) Please reach out if you have further questions.
Fifth Grade Kids to Kids Padlet
I noticed that students were leaving a lot of comments to each other in the stream of Google Classroom. I totally understand because the kids want to talk with each other. So I created a Padlet for the students to post comments, drawings, photos, and videos to each other. Only our students will have access and I will have access to what they post. I created a video to show students how to use the Padlet. Please feel free to watch it and let me know if you have any questions. Participation is optional! I am just hoping to keep the stream clear on Google Classroom for posts about their classwork and assignments.
Choice Board Activities Later...
The Choice Board activities will be loaded on Tuesday or Wednesday. Your child will need to complete his/her assessments and then work assignments in the subject areas this week. I wanted to make sure the students focused on those assignments and did their best work before "clicking away" on the optional Choice Board activities for this week.
Celebrating Students!
I like to use the blog on our class web page to post newsletters and celebrate students! If your child has something he/she would like to share, let me know. I've had students share everything from stories and photos of sports accomplishments and unique Halloween costumes to more photos of science experiments, pets, and Lego creations! We'll start our first celebration with a fourth grade author! See the post here.
Learning This Week
Fifth graders will be busy this week! In ELA, students will be using Screencastify to create a video about themselves. In math, we'll be looking at representing numbers in different formats in "Figure Me Out". In science, students will be exploring "What is a Scientist?" Lastly, in social studies, we'll review the continents and oceans.
