What is AVID?
Tiffany Ridge is implementing a program called AVID in all classrooms this year. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID focuses on teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking. AVID provides educators a structure for teaching students the academic habits they need to be more successful in middle school, high school, and college or career, in an age-appropriate and challenging way. The strong college-bound culture will be visible to encourage elementary students to begin thinking about their future while embedding the AVID skills of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading into grade level curriculum. Throughout this first school year of AVID, families will see K-5 classrooms adopt age-appropriate Organization systems to develop greater independence for ALL students including the use of daily visual schedules, student academic binders, and grade level planners.
Conversations about School
When you think of parent involvement, do you picture yourself volunteering in your child's classroom? That's one way to help – but research shows that supporting your child's education at home is even more important. Here are four conversations that will help you stay involved.
"Let's see what you brought home."
Look at completed work to find out what your youngster is learning and how well she's doing. You could comment on her social studies report or pottery project, for instance. ('You know a lot about our state's history!") Also, respond to notes from her teacher, and sign her weekly folder or daily planner if required.
"Show me what you have for homework."
It's your child's job to do any homework, but you play a role, too. Make sure she knows what she's supposed to do by having her explain the tasks to you. After she finishes her homework, glance over the work to see that it's complete.
"Describe a book you enjoyed today."
This gives you an idea of what your youngster prefers to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what she'd like to read tonight. Encourage her reading and listening skills by reading aloud to her and letting her read to you.
"Tell me what you learned that you'd like to know more about."
Use her interests as jumping-off points for activities to share. If she likes geometry, you might draw different shapes together. If she's fascinated by how animals adapt to winter, take her to the library to research the subject or to the zoo to see live animals.

Watch D.O.G.S. at Tiffany Ridge
WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative program that we have at Tiffany Ridge! Even though the program emphasizes Dads getting involved at school, ALL parents can be Watch DOGS, so Moms are welcome to sign up too!
The goals of the program are to provide positive role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important and to provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying. WatchDOGS volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. school.
To learn more about WatchDOGS, join us on September 20th from 7:30-8:30am for "Donuts with Dudes" and enjoy a donut with your student! You can sign up now at the link below to select a day to be a Watch DOG or at Donuts with Dudes! This link will be open throughout the school year as well. Brian Moran is our Tiffany Ridge "Top Dog" for this school year.
During the school day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.

Nominate a Staff Member for the Park Hill STAR Award
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee. Anyone can nominate an employee for this award by using the form below. It asks you to share how your nominee demonstrates our district values of continuous improvement, high expectations, integrity, visionary leadership and student focus. You can also share how your nominee supports the goals in our district’s strategic plan.
