- If COVID positive, stay home!
Principal's Message
The teachers have been working hard these past few weeks to help students transition back to school and teach school procedures and norms. Now it's the parent's turn....we hope to have you join us for Back to School Night today as the teachers will be sharing about their curriculum and ways you can get involved to support your child's experience at Oster.
Traffic around the school continues to be busy, especially during drop off and pick up. Please remember to use extra caution in and around the school parking lot. Remember to be patient and give yourself plenty of time before the bell rings. When you are dropping off your child(ren) in the valet in front of the school, please have their backpack, lunch, and other belongings in the car, not in the trunk, ready to go. This will help expedite traffic flow during the morning rush.
At Oster, we believe that learning should be fun and one of childhood's most enjoyable childhood experiences. Our staff is adept at creating exciting learning opportunities for children and creating a learning community that teaches kids about life and relationships and how to read, problem solve and communicate effectively. I encourage you to get involved with your child's learning. As a parent, you are your child's first teacher, and no one knows your child better than you do, so as your child progresses throughout the grades, the staff and I look forward to partnering with you to help your child have a successful school experience.
As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions, and we look forward to seeing many of you at Back to School. Thanks for partnering with us!
Go Cougars!
~Mrs. Taormina
Student Emergency Update: Action Required for Parents
All parents received an email with the subject line "Union School District - Emergency Data Update 2022-2023 School Year". The Emergency Data Update Form is typically filled out on Back to School Night. However, this is now down via email. Please make sure you make necessary changes to your students information. If no changes are needed make sure you check the box "no changes". Directions can be found in the email.
Wednesday, August 31st: Back To School Night @ 6:00
Friday, September 2nd: No School for Students (Teacher Inservice Day)
Monday, September 5th: No School (Labor Day)

Independent Study Requests: Short Term
Vacations taken while school is in session can cost our school and district thousands of dollars each year. USD gets funding based on the number of students physically at school on a day-to-day basis. Please do not take vacations unless they fall on a school holiday or break if at all possible.
If a trip is necessary, parents may request a short-term independent study contract (for absences from 5-10 days) two weeks before the absence. To request an Independent Study Contract, parents will need to email Mrs. Taormina to discuss their plans. If a parent fails to notify the office two weeks before the trip, the student will be marked as unexcused for the duration of their absence.

Our School Site Council has two open seats for parents interested in serving on our Board. Please consider applying for one of these positions. The School Site Council (SCC) is responsible for bringing together representatives of the entire school community to continually assess and improve the school. The main focus of SSC is to support and strengthen the core academic program, and is comprised of staff and parent representatives, with parent representative elected by their peers. The SSC is responsible for developing and maintaining the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) and Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP). The SSC is composed of 10 members. These members shall be:
School Administrator
School Administrator Assistant
3 Staff members
5 Parents of Oster School
For the 2022/23 school year, there will be two (2)open seats. These seats are for a term of two years, beginning September 2022. Parents of Oster Elementary students are invited to submit an application as a candidate for one of these seats. Application must be submitted to the school by Friday, September 9, 2022 by 3:00pm. Applications can be submitted by clicking the link below and including a biography and statement of intention for the positions. All candidates' applications and voting ballot will be posted in the Oster September 14th newsletter.
We all love our 4-legged pets!
If you are walking with your pet to drop off or pick up, please be sure to keep your dog at least 50 feet from all gate entrances. We do have students (and adults!) who are fearful of dogs.
Thank you for your cooperation.
