Principal and Assistant Principal's Message
We had a fantastic opening to the 2018-2019 school year at Springville K-8! This is the first time we started school in August, but students were happy and excited to get back into school routines and see Springville friends and teachers. We also welcomed new kindergarten friends as well as new students in other grade levels and a whole new group of 6th graders in our middle school. We have an outstanding crew this year!
Like previous years, we loved seeing so many families at Back-To-School Nights this week. It is a such pleasure to get to know the families in our community. We heard so many compliments about the classroom sessions with your teachers, and teachers loved meeting new parents. We look forward to your partnership this year.
As a school, we are also settling into the routines of school. Students are practicing our Habits of Citizenship (safe, kind and respectful) throughout the building, and teachers are introducing the beginning of their units and expeditions . Our fall conferences are coming up in mid-October, and this will be the time teachers will discuss academic goals with you and how you can help support these goals at home. We will be sending more information about conferences in the coming weeks.
We hope you will contact us if you have questions or feedback. We value your input as members of our school community. Have a wonderful weekend!!

Attendance Matters!
Tips for Getting Your Child to School:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Don’t let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, the school counselor, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

Volunteering at Springville
For that reason, it's critically important for all volunteers to register with the district system (MyVolunterPage.com). The system requires a background check that can take time, so we ask that you register as soon as possible. This is required if you come often to volunteer or even if you come occasionally to help with classroom parties or volunteer on a field study. Every adult that works with students must be registered in our system with a background check.
We are also reminding parents that we are asking volunteers to keep younger siblings at home so that your full attention can be dedicated to Springville students. We hope this invites opportunities for families to connect for childcare and support one another so that more parents can volunteer if they wish.
Please click on the link below to register in the volunteer system.
DISTRICT NEWS
Physical Education Program Grant
The Beaverton School District has been awarded a $669,484 Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is in year two of the three year grant. The Beaverton School District (BSD) has developed a comprehensive project to improve the quality of physical education in the District, increase physical activity before, during, and after school, and create a school culture of wellness and activity that improves student health, nutrition, social/emotional development, and learning outcomes. In addition to the grant funds, the District has developed several community partnerships to support the project including Nike and Tualatin Hills for a contribution of over $235,000. The BSD program will serve more than 28,000 K-8 students.
As part of this grant there is required data that must be collected on physical activity, nutrition and physical fitness. Please read the attached form with more information about the data collection. If after reading you decide your student will not participate in the data collection, print, sign and send the form back to the main office of your student’s school.
