Shine Bright with Supt. Rebecca A. Jenkins
Dear District 70 Families:
Happy New Year!
A big warm welcome back to school this week. We have loved having our students back in our buildings, although the weather is certainly keeping us on our toes this week!
I hope you and your student had a wonderful winter break and you were able to connect and make memories. Now that we are back and the second semester is underway, we are diving right back into our Learning Together vision.
Below is a short video featuring some of our staff explaining what Learning Together means here in District 70. There’s no better way than to start a brand new year surrounded by this staff of teachers and professionals who truly care and support our students in their journey.
Enjoy the video, and please know that the staff in each of our five buildings are thrilled to have your students back. We are ready for a great 2024!
Shine Bright,
Rebecca

D70 Families Learning Together Event on Jan. 24th
D70 has its first Families Learning Together of 2024 coming up! Please join us to hear Audrey Grunst, Therapist & CEO of Simply Bee Counseling talk about Self Care and Stress Management for Busy Families. This evening event for parents or caregivers in D70 will focus on:
Why self-care is necessary to live a long and happy life
How stress impacts our genetics
How mindfulness-based stress reduction can improve a family’s overall well-being
Please join us at Copeland in their Learning Center on January 24th at 7:00 pm.
For more information about this event and other events planned for the second half of the school year, please visit: D70 Families Learning Together Catalog. Please contact Kerri Bongle, director of growth and talent, kbongle@d70schools.org, with any questions.
We love it when the first thing students do on the first day back after winter break is to visit the school Learning Center for more books to read!
We missed our friends over winter break, so a great "Find A Friend Who..." activity broke the ice in the classroom in no time!

HMS STAR Results Available For Parents
Teachers assess student understanding, learning, and growth in a variety of informal and formal ways throughout the school year. D70 uses several assessments that are administered throughout the school year to help students, teachers, and parents better understand strengths and areas that can be targeted for improvement.
In December Highland Middle School students took STAR Reading and Math. These results are now available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please make sure you are using the new PowerSchool link.
Accessing STAR assessment scores:
Please log into your PowerSchool account and select your child.
Scroll to the bottom of this page and click on the link that says “View Star Test Results”.
Winter K-5 Benchmark Assessments
D70 first through fifth grade students will be taking STAR Reading and Math from Jan. 23 through 25. On these dates, please make sure your child’s device is fully charged before coming to school.
Students in Kindergarten will be assessed during the same window (January 23-25) using AIMSwebPlus. More information about this tool, please click here: AIMSWeb Parent Letter
Parents can help their child on these assessments by:
1. Make sure that your child attends school on time each day of testing.
2. Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest the night before testing.
3. Provide breakfast on the mornings of testing.
4. Remind your child to ask the teacher questions if he or she does not understand the test directions.
6. Let your child know that you have confidence in his or her ability to do his or her best.
Creating art like Michelangelo!
So excited! It's almost time for the HMS musical auditions!!
The talent displayed in student talent shows is amazing! Such gifted children!
Stay In Touch Via Text Messages for When Schools Close
In case of an emergency, District 70 will connect with families through emails, recorded phone messages, and text messages. But under Illinois law, text messages are sent only to families who sign up to receive them.
We encourage everyone to sign up for text messages because they generally reach everyone almost as quickly as they are sent. D70 only sends text messages in an emergency, including school closures, late buses, etc.
You can opt-in by texting 67587 with either a Y or a YES as the message you send. (This may not be activated for 48 hours from when you opt in.) This text (SMS) service only will be used in the event of an emergency.
