Learning about Teaching Science from the PandemicThe COVID-19 pandemic shows the critical need for all students to learn science. They must be prepared for a lifetime of science decisions, including some very serious ones. This course is designed to guide participants to answer two essential questions: 1) What does living in a pandemic tell us about the need to learn science and how science should be taught? 2) How does teaching the three dimensions of Alabama’s science standards guide a shift to a pedagogy rich in student engagement, deep conceptual understanding, and real-life application? Audience: 6-12 Teachers This course will be open from June 8 until June 26. Learn at your own pace. SESSION IS FULL Facilitators: Dr. Lee Meadows, UAB & Dr. Amy Murphy, AMSTI-ALSDE | Shaking Up the Learning: From Static to DynamicDuring this course, we will look at the WHY behind moving from static to dynamic teaching using Kasey Bell's book Shake Up Learning. Participants will be assigned specific chapters to read independently before each session. As a group, we will discuss and reflect on the new learning from the text. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge of what effective integration looks like in a dynamic learning environment by identifying shifts needed to move from a static to a dynamic learning environment. There will be an option to participate in a continued virtual book study. The FIRST 5 participants that register will get a free copy of the book. We will explore ways to deepen students' fractional reasoning using virtual tools to help students make meaningful connections, clarify ideas, and build fraction sense. Virtual manipulatives cannot take the place of physical manipulation in the classroom, so we will use tools such as Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, etc. that are accessible to teachers, but using a virtual format.
