Principal's Message
We understand that many of our staff members, students and neighbors have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey through various degrees, and we remain committed to supporting families as they begin the recovery process. In order to support our staff members and community members, we are providing a list of resources that you may find helpful, as well as ways that you can assist those who have been affected. Cindy G. has sent out an email with many resources available to you go through the "Post-Hurricane Harvey Reboot" document. Ensure you read this document thoroughly to ascertain important information.
Some of you inquired about bilingual resources and I was able to locate one for you to use in class with our children: http://www.colorincolorado.org/article/helping-children-after-natural-disaster. Within this website, you will find even more information to be utilized for all of our children.
As we greet our children tomorrow, it is day one all over again. We will establish daily norms that have positive impacts on culture and climate, the expectations are:
- Everyone is greeting every child back. Acknowledge each child in the hallways as you are on duty, then as children enter the classroom, shake each child's hand with a good morning greeting. (this will be a daily norm)
- Hold a community circle daily using the resources and lesson plans that Demetra Rushing sent to you. Starting next week, gauge your community circle lessons depending on the needs of your class or themes you want to review.
- Incorporate a read aloud with your lessons for Post-Harvey; Romina Campana shared an excellent resource and idea for you to use in the classroom. If you run out of ideas, visit with Ann Parsons, Elizabeth Gasca, or Katie Gentry for a brainstorming session.
- Review routines and procedures (ROARS) from PBIS Cadre, take your students through the school again to practice the routines and procedures for cafeteria, walking in the breezeways/hallways, and dismissal procedures.
- Ensure all students have the appropriate tags.
- "Limitless Learning through Community" is our theme. We may have more children join us by the end of the week- make sure to continually welcome and build community throughout the week and school year. Establish a system or greeting for this process when a child join your class.
- At the end of the day, ensure you give your children dismissal salutation such as, "We had a great day today scholars, have a good evening, and I can't wait to see your thinking tomorrow when we explore (division/solar system/poetry)."
We can't wait to see you upon return tomorrow- be mindful of traffic so please leave your home extra early. I have found coming from Cypress, TX my best route is 529 to 290, then turning onto Hempstead, turning on Gessner until Kempwood.
Welcome back my friends and here's to a smooth ride for you tomorrow!
Wildcat Love,
Rachel Martinez
