Bobcat Beat

News from Hempstead Middle School

Parents and Guardians,

It’s hard to believe it’s May! Where did the year go? We still have a few more weeks of school, and it seems like it will be one of the busiest months for our students! We have end of the year MAP testing, STAAR testing, field trips or fun days for each grade level, awards assembly, and a faculty/student volleyball game! Please refer to the upcoming dates listed below for specific dates of events.

Today also begins Teacher Appreciation Week. We here at HMS are excited to honor our amazing teachers this week and highlight all of the hard work they pour into our students. Please take a moment this week as you have time to let them know how much you appreciate them and their contributions to your child.

STAAR Testing this Month

STAAR season is quickly approaching, and we want all students to be adequately prepared for the test. Please help our teachers to help your students to be successful on the STAAR test. Our 8th graders will begin testing on May 10th and continue through May 17th. Our 7th and 6th graders will be testing the week of May 10-13. Our students will be testing in all grades, and it is so important that we have the support of our parents.

What are some things you can do to help your Bobcat? Here are some pointers to start getting your Bobcat focused on being test ready:

  • Be on time; ensure that your student is at school by 7:30 AM each day.

  • Be respectful and responsible; students will come to school ready to test.

  • Eat a good breakfast and get a good night’s sleep every night.

It is our goal to do everything we can to get your student STAAR ready, so at the school we have been focused on teaching and learning. Please have conversations with your student to ensure that they are prepared, and if they have any questions, or need any last minute help, encourage them to talk with their teacher(s) in order to get that support.

Lastly, the biggest piece of testing advice is for your Bobcat to be confident. For some students, this may be the first time they are taking the STAAR test in a while. Encourage them to relax, take their time, and answer all questions completely. Utilize the tools they have been taught this year to be confident and stand firm in their answer choices. We want to again thank you for your support. We are honored to have you as part of our Bobcat family.

Attendance Counts Every Day!

Each grade level that hits 97% attendance will be allowed to have their phones out at lunch time the next day. Be sure your child is at school so we can hit those attendance goals, and they get to use their phones at lunch. Let’s be able to say, “We A.C.E.D. our attendance this week!”

Principal’s 100 - Bobcat Brags!

We have had almost 40 winners for Principal’s 100 so far! We love recognizing your child for all of the positive things they do at HMS! Be sure to ask your child if they’ve received a Bobcat Brag recently!

Hempstead ISD Parent Academy

Once per month, Hempstead ISD hosts a parent meeting about various topics of interest. This month, Margarita Paramore will be leading parents through end of the year procedures, summer school, etc. Please join Ms. Paramore in the Bobcat Den on Wednesday, May 11th from 5-6 p.m.

HB 4545 Letters

Parents, the HB 4545 letters sent out were to inform you about your child’s progress in meeting the required hours if they did not pass STAAR last school year. If you signed the waiver to allow your child to participate in learning in groups of more than three students at a time, the majority of our students are enrolled in an intervention class that allows the students to accrue the hours needed to meet the requirements for HB 4545. If your child is enrolled in Pathblazer/Accelerated Lab, Reading Lab, Star Success Reading, Math Lab, or Star Success Math, the required hours will be met. If they have a signed waiver and meet their hours and pass this year’s STAAR test, they will not be required to go to summer school. If they do not pass STAAR this year, they will be required to attend summer school to work towards the required 30 hours needed for HB 4545. Please reach out to your grade level assistant principal if you any further questions. Ms. Holmes works with our 6th grade students, Dr. Ward works with our 7th grade students, and they both work with 8th grade students.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will not be able to offer yearbooks this year. We will be offering a journalism class next year to our 7th and 8th graders and they will be able to assist in creating the 2022-2023 yearbook for HMS. We apologize for this, but appreciate your understanding in the matter.
