Weekly news from Hempstead Middle School

Happy New Year!

We hope the holiday break was filled with joy and happiness for all of you! It is always nice to take a break from things, but it's also nice to get back to a normal routine. As I have mentioned previously, we are focusing on building positive relationships with students, so we are excited to have them back on campus!

As we close out the first semester and begin the second, our teachers are focused on helping each student reach their potential. Teachers will be working on goal-setting, and the whole campus will be working on relationship building. We plan to do this through Community Circles on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning in the third quarter. Classes will be shortened by a few minutes throughout the day, and we will use that time to meet with a teacher in a small group to focus on getting to know each other at a deeper level.

We want each and every one of our students to know they are important to us. Through these small group Community Circles, students will be able to talk about a wide range of topics with peers and the teacher. This time will also be used to deliver lessons on social emotional aspects and skills that may or may not be new to each student. We will cover lessons such as how to be a good friend, how to disagree appropriately, identifying the emotion they are feeling and how to work through it, and more. We love our students and want to make sure they are prepared for not only high school, but for life, in general. And, we want them to know that we love them, because they are why we are here every day.

BETA Induction Ceremony

The BETA Club will be inducting new members on Tuesday, January 11th at 5:30 in the Bobcat Den. Invited students will receive an invitation to the event.

To be selected to be a member of BETA shows outstanding dedication in the areas of academics and service. BETA Club’s mission is to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, leadership, and service. Through BETA, we will develop leaders of tomorrow by serving others.

8th Grade Boys' Basketball Team Wins in Nailbiter!

HMS' boys' basketball team pulled out a win over Harmony on Thursday, January 6th. The factors of teamwork and dedication allowed our Bobcats to pull off the upset on Harmony's turf.

HMS will be putting out a yearbook this year. More information will be forthcoming, but quantities will be limited so once the order form is out, you'll want to act fast! Be on the lookout for this information soon!

Student IDs

All students had Student IDs made and were given a lanyard to wear their ID during their social studies class. Students MUST wear their IDs daily. A replacement ID is $5, and a replacement lanyard is $1.

Many students are saying their IDs are at home. Please help your child locate his/her ID and put it in their backpacks. Please remind them to keep their IDs with the belongings they take to school.

Students will receive a consequence for not wearing their IDs.

Tardies = Absences!

In a previous edition of The Bobcat Beat, we shared with you all that students get 3 tardies and then when they hit that 4th tardy, they must serve lunch detention as well. What we failed to mention was that on their 3rd tardy to a particular class, students are also given an absence. So for example, if I'm tardy to 1st period, 4th period, and 7th period, that is not an absence. But if I am tardy to 1st period 3 times, that is an absence. If I am tardy to 2nd period 3 times, then that is an absence. Please remind your student the importance of getting to class on time! This has especially been a problem in the mornings. We appreciate all you do to help, Parents & Guardians!

It is very important for your child to be in attendance at school each day. Quarantining is understandable, however, we do have remote conferencing that will allow your child to be marked present. We also understand if your child is ill. If this is the case, please be sure to send a doctor’s note or a note by you, the parent/guardian explaining the reason for the absence. Thank you for being understanding and working with us on this.

Remote Conferencing

If you are quarantined due to exposure or a positive test, you may contact the front office for access to a Chromebook. This year, TEA is requiring us to provide 4 hours of online conferencing for students from the 4 main content areas. When you pick up a Chromebook, the schedule will be provided to you. To be marked present, you must attend each of the sessions and remain online with the teacher for the full hour. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s English/Language Arts, Math, Science, or Social Studies/History teachers.
