Just an outcast trying to find her place in this world

Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak, is a winner of eight state book awards, and a finalist for eleven more.

Imagine being hated by the world for doing what was right. Would you hide or would you stand up for what you believe in? Melinda has been there and in this book she discovers that keeping quiet is more hurtful than speaking up for what is right. The very second she set foot on the floors of Merryweather high school she could feel a breeze of hatred blow right through her. She received dirty looks, she lost friends, and she lost hope. She does her best to just survive each day and get home where it is safe. Instead she constantly comes home to chaos and she just can not seem to escape. She learns to stand up for herself and she is determined to be heard.

“I have survived. I am here. Confused, screwed up, but here. So, how can I find my way? Is there a chain saw of the soul, an ax I can take to my memories or fears?”
Laurie Halse Anderson, Speak

Speak is a book of encouragement, it shows teenagers that it's okay to speak up! It shows how everyone has struggles and that they can overcome bullying. Bullying is a major problem all over the world and Speak is a great example of how to stand up for what's right and stop bullying. I, as well as other readers, highly recommend teenagers to read this book because it relates so well to today's society.
