5th Grade ASPIRE Math
October 20, 2017
End of the First Nine-Weeks
We have reached the end of our first grading period! All students, regardless of grade, will receive a report card grade for the first nine-weeks. We are asking the students to clear their math binder. Please help them find a place for their work so they may look back on their notes when we prepare for STAAR.
iXL Update
Many students are taking advantage of IXL to work ahead or to review concepts and skills we have already learned. We are excited to report that Mr. Boykin’s class has made progress in 20 skills, and Miss Hayes’ class has worked on 68!
This Week
This week, the ASPIRE Math 5 scholars explored the world of patterns. First, we wrote input/output tables based on given additive and multiplicative rules. Students created cut-out cards that reflected words, tables, and rules. Next, scholars made graphs from given rules, and worked backwards to find the rule from a given graph. Students created graphs and tables to reflect a trip using the distance formula, express profits from a bike tour, and to visually display the race between the Tortoise and the Hare.
Next Week
Next Week, the ASPIRE 5 scholars will investigate the order of operations. First, we will look at the logic behind the order of operations, and why they are considered a natural process. After practicing the algorithm, students will use their knowledge to insert grouping symbols and operations to make expressions true, participate in the 4 Fours competition, and even introduce exponents to the process. We are looking forward to another successful week. Thank you for all of your support!
