We are now 11 days away from our 1st administration of the Spring STAAR/EOC Exams since the 2018-2019 school year, and the Garland ISD is committed to complying with federal and state laws relating to state assessments. We are also committed to providing the safest environment possible for students and staff on our campuses. While we believe that teacher assessment of learning is the most meaningful form of knowing our students as learners, we recognize that data from assessments like STAAR can help us evaluate the impact of the COVID pandemic on student learning.
In order to ensure equity for all students, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is requiring all students to be physically present onsite for all state assessments, including STAAR. In order to reduce the number of students on campus during testing days, Garland ISD will take advantage of the option to provide instruction remotely to those students not testing. This means that some grade levels, both face-to-face and remote learners, will stay home on testing days and will complete asynchronous lessons through Canvas without any live instruction. Below you will find two charts; the first notes the testing dates and the second notes the dates of when students will participate in asynchronous, remote learning.

I am asking that we stay the course in preparing our students with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to claim victory. Most of what we have seen are students with major gaps in their learning. Now that our campus teachers have spent two- thirds of the year assessing students’ areas of concern and strengths, we will continue to narrow our focus and close those academic gaps needed in our STAAR/EOC camps. Equally noted, our students also struggle with something we often miss at times- “the psychosocial motivation.” This encompasses the mental, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions needed in achieving goals.
Psychosocial motivation is most commonly used to support our top academic achievers as well. In many cases, they:
struggle with the thoughts of not achieving that superior grade, rating or achievement on a test
get side tracked because of a non academic commitments (extra-curricular activities)
experience major changes in their life and other environment factors.
To make my point even more relevant, you would have caught a glimpse of what I am referencing if you had a chance to attend the ECHS Blazer Ceremony. Our students were so excited about BEING RECOGNIZED, achieving the honor, and most importantly BEING CELEBRATED for their many accomplishments! Imagine how we can change the game if we recognize and celebrate all students from the smallest to the greatest of their achievements. Parents, you can certainly support our students by providing them that encouragement each day. In the next few newsletters, I will be sharing preparational tactics that you can explore and use in equipping our students with the support they need from home.
Southside family, I am excited to unveil our new word marks associated with our Titan mascot. (Titan Word Marks) Soon, we will have access to our vector files to give to our vendors for publication and production purposes. In addition, you should also keep a watchful eye on, “What’s happening in our building.” This is the unofficial name of the publicized work Mrs. Wesley is constructing to keep campus stakeholders informed about the many great building enhancement projects happening right now.
We have so much to be thankful for, family! I am so blessed to be amongst your child’s presence each and every day as they give me hope and inspiration in becoming a better me.
Have a great week!
