Counselor Corner
Dear Parents,
During the month of September, we will begin explicitly teaching Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills during classroom guidance. Social-Emotional Learning is vital for students because it teaches them crucial life skills, including the ability to understand themselves, develop a positive self-image, take responsibility for their actions, and forge relationships with the people around them.
We want to provide the opportunity to extend the learning conversation at home. Our SEL topic for September is Self-Control. In the classrooms, we will be busy learning about what Self-Control is, why it’s important, and how to manage and practice it. Below are some opportunities to help your child expand their Self-Control knowledge. We look forward to exploring this topic in school and hope that your family will enjoy it just as much!
Sincerely,
Your Counselors
Angel Cunningham (K-2) & LaKendra Todd-Collins (3-5)
READ ABOUT IT!
Here are some books to help learn more about Self Control:
- The Busy Beaver by Nicholas Oldland
- Clark The Shark by Bruce Hale
- Oh No, George by Chris Haughton
- Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker by Christianne Jones
PRACTICE IT! Set out 3 small pieces of candy. Tell your child that they can have one piece now, two pieces in 15 minutes, or all 3 in 30 minutes. Once the child makes their choice, talk about why they made the choice they did. If they chose to wait, ask your child if it was difficult for them to wait for the candy. Reflect on the benefits of self-control.
TALK ABOUT IT!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about self-control with your child:
- What does self-control mean and why do you think it’s important?
- Is self-control easy or difficult for you? Why?
- Tell me about a time when you used self-control?
- Tell me about a time when you didn’t use self-control?
- How do you think using self-control can help you in school?
- How do you think using self-control can help you outside of school?
- How would your life look different if you used more self-control?
Clinic Donations Needed
The Brookwood Elementary clinic is in need of donations of pants, shorts, and leggings. Students use these in the event of accidents, milk spills, muddy clothes, or bloody noses. Unreturned clothes have depleted our clinic supply of extra changes.
All sizes of boys' and girls' athletic-type pants, short, or leggings are needed. Donations can be sent in with students or dropped off at the Brookwood Elementary front office.

Free & Reduced Lunch Applications are available online.
Complete a meal application by Wednesday, September 14, to continue meal benefits and ensure added support for your school!
Throughout the pandemic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allowed school systems across the country to provide breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge to families. However, the USDA waivers expired during the summer, and students are required to pay for meals based on their individual eligibility.
In order to receive free or reduced-price meal benefits, families must complete the Free and Reduced-price Meal Application and meet eligibility requirements. Click here to learn more and find a link to the application: https://www.gcpsk12.org/Page/29759.
