First Grade News
What's Up In First Grade?
*Conferences are next week on Monday and Tuesday. If you need any changes to your time or are unable to make your scheduled appointment, please go to the main office to try to find a time that works for you and we will fit you into our schedule. We would really like to meet with all the parents and conferences are a great way to make sure we are all on the same page about how your student is doing academically and socially.
*Along a similar line, report cards are going to be sent out on Friday. You are meant to keep the report card for your own records, we will have a copy for our own records and to go over with you at conferences. A quick reminder, at this time of the year 2's (approaching the end of the year standard) and even some 1's are completely normal. The conference will be a great time to talk about ways that you and both of us can work as a team to help your child academically and socially.
*As we get ready for the holiday season, Thanksgiving in particular, we would like to ask for your help for a special lunch next week on Tuesday, November 24th. This year with the additions to prek this is the first year that first grade does not do the Thanksgiving lunch upstairs. We know that the holidays are busy but we would like to have some tradition Thanksgiving foods that we are going to be learning about in English and Spanish as we make connections to the first Thanksgiving. We are going to post a list on the bulletin board outside of my door (Mrs. Holguin's) with a list of thanksgiving foods we would like someone to contribute. Most of the items can and should be store-bought and easy to prepare. We are looking for one family to bring items such as (cranberry sauce, corn bread, green beans, mashed potatoes, and a roasted chicken from a grocery store). Thank you so much for your support I think this should be a great hands on learning opportunity for our students!
Academic Focus for the Week in Spanish and English
-Social Studies, Reading and Writing: We are focusing on the origins of Thanksgiving and the food and customs of pilgrims and Native Americans.
Math- We have just introduced the concept of subtraction within 10. Practicing this skill at home along with saying and writing numbers up to 120 are a great way to strengthen math skills.
Reading/Phonics- Please continue to practice both Spanish and English letter names and sounds as well as syllables and blends in both languages as well as reading with your child at night.

Fulcrum Grant Applications!
Fulcrum Tuition Assistance Application for 2016-17...Deadline Dec 4th!
The window of time has opened for next year's tuition assistance application. This is an opportunity to receive $1100 for each child in grades K - 8, based on a family's income level. You can apply at: http://www.fulcrumfoundation.org/apply-for-grant/assistance/. This application is available in both Spanish and English. As we prepare for tuition contract meetings this Spring, please note that families will not be eligible for any financial assistance through Holy Rosary school UNLESS they have first applied through the Fulcrum Foundation. This means that no contracts will be negotiated without applying first through Fulcrum. Berenice (at the Front Desk) is happy to help parents complete the online application. If you need to schedule a time to meet with her to go through the application, please email her at office@hrrsjda.org. Applications must be completed byFriday, Dec. 4th.
