Alabama High School Athletics Association Bylaw Of The Week
AHSAA BYLAW OF THE WEEK GRADES 7-12
Scenario: Coach Bishop is aware of the new game limitations for basketball for the 2018-2019 season. He knows that as long as he only plays 30 games, it doesn’t matter what the combination of regular season and tournament games are. However, in an effort to save money, he decides to see if he can get 4 other schools to come to his school and play a “round robin” format, count it as 3 games and not grant a champion since it is simply 3 games. Question: In accordance with the AHSAA regulations, does Coach Bishop have to sanction this event? Rule 3, Section 3. Sanctioning Requirements: No interscholastic athletic event involving more than two teams shall be permitted without the official sanction of the AHSAA. Volleyball & track tri-matches; golf, wrestling and cross-country tri-and quad-matches; swimming tri-meets; bowling tri-matches and track four-way meets do not have to be sanctioned during regular season play. A team or individual cannot participate in any tournament or contest that is not sanctioned by the AHSAA. Interpretation: Coach Bishop must sanction the event due to the fact there aremore than two teams involved. Any time three or more teams are competing in an event at the same location, and more than one game is played by one of the teams, the event must be sanctioned. A “round robin” format is considered a tournament regardless of whether a champion is decided or not. Penalty: If the event was not sanctioned, all schools that were involved would be assessed a monetary fine and placed on probation for a period of one year. Proactive Measures: All principals, athletic directors and coaches should be cognizant of AHSAA bylaws regarding sanctioning events. As the rule states, any event involving more than two teams must be sanctioned. The designation of a “champion” is irrelevant to whether an event should be sanctioned or not. Therefore, anytime a school is in an event with more than two teams (except for the sports defined within the rule), the school should affirm the event is an AHSAA sanctioned event. Please contact our office if you have any questions about what should be sanctioned. We will be happy to assist you.
