Principal’s Message
Kia ora koutou
What a proud moment it was for the Rātā Street School whānau when it was announced in the Queen’s Birthday honours that Dave Appleyard, former Principal, was to become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his career as Principal of this very special place. It goes without saying that the team here are very proud of Dave and for him to be recognised in this way is quite an achievement. On Monday there was an article published about Dave on the news website Stuff which is well worth the read. Here is the link for those that missed it https://bit.ly/3w83Vik.
This week is Support Staff Week. We are very thankful to have such a dedicated and amazing Support Staff team here at school, working with the tamariki. They are an incredible asset to the school and do so much to support the children engage in the learning programmes across the school. This can range from working with a child one on one, supporting small groups of students and by supporting the teacher with programme delivery. They are a caring team and help the children to feel safe, valued and supported. Quite simply we could not do without them! So a big thank you to the whole team.

Avalon Intermediate Information Evening
Avalon Intermediate will be holding an Information Evening on Monday 14 June from 6pm to 7.30pm.
Matariki
Matariki marks the start of the Māori New Year and this year it is being held from Saturday 19 June - Sunday 11 July. The teachers are busy planning activities to help the tamariki learn about Matariki and to celebrate Māori culture. A notice was sent home yesterday informing whānau about the hangi that can be ordered for $5, as part of the celebration. There was also a request for whānau support with activities, so if you’re able to help out on Friday 2 July, please return the slip to school as soon as possible.
Samoan Language Week
Last week was Samoan Language Week and thanks to Mrs Sopoaga we celebrated in style! A highlight was the Samoan language lesson videos that were made by the students and uploaded to our school Facebook page each day. The making of the lolly leis on Friday was a huge hit and a fantastic way to finish the week.

If your child is absent, please ring and leave a clear message on the school phone line before 8.50am. You need to leave your child’s name, room number and the reason they are absent. The school phone number is 567 0096.
