This week began our first Theme Test of the year. Skills from Themes 1 and 2 were tested, as well as HFW's (high frequency words) and robust words. The week of 10/26 we will begin Theme 3 - Turning Corners. Some of the skills we will be working on in this theme include: short vowels e, a, i and u, initial blends with s, l and r, and contractions with 'll. In reading we will be working on several focus skills, such as comparing and contrasting, picking out details in stories and focusing on the plot. In writing we have authored our first books! Handwriting is coming to a close as we finish reviewing the final letters of the alphabet....remember letters start from the top down!
We are finishing up Unit 2 - Everyday Uses of Numbers and will be testing next week. After Unit 2 we will begin Unit 3 - Visual Patterns, Number Patterns and Counting.
Skills in this unit include addition and subtraction on the number line and finding the values of dimes, nickels and pennies. There are lots of excellent games and resources on the EDM Online site:
*Check out the Penny-Cup Game and Two-Fisted Penny Addition

Please remember that any lunch money coming to school in your child's folder needs to be in a marked envelope with your child's name, lunch money and 1P. Folders and homework should be returned to school on a daily basis. If your child will not being riding the bus (involved in after school club, parent pick-up, etc) they will need a note.
