Skipton Community Orchestra

Autumn Newsletter 2014

Welcome to Autumn!

I hope you've all settled into the new music by now. You may have noticed that we're having a bit of a change as they are longer pieces but don't worry as it'll be mixed in with some Christmassy music for the concert on 5th December. Meanwhile we hope you'll enjoy the 'Music from the Musicals' theme.

New Conductor

As you are aware Tricia has left for pastures new in Somerset and this has left a big void as she was involved heavily in the music circle around The Dales. It is very sad to see her go but it is the start of another exciting episode in her musical career and we wish her all the very best. Luckily Tricia has left us in good hands with Jess Mahler. You may recognise her from the summer concert as she kindly played bassoon for us. Jess has offered to stay until Christmas but if we all say pretty please....she may stay longer!!

Christmas Concert

Our Christmas concert is again at Christ Church C of E School in Skipton. We are playing on Friday 5th December at 7pm and I'm sure coffee and cake will be on the cards again! We are hoping to run a small raffle as it proved a good way of fundraising (just over £150 last time) to buy new music so if you have any unwanted presents lurking in your cupboards that you wish to donate then please dig them out. All donations are appreciated and if you know of a local business that might be willing to donate....please feel free to ask on our behalf. We do acknowledge businesses who donate prizes on our programme so they will get publicity for their generosity.

We're in demand!

Yey, we've been asked to get involved with the Skipton Christmas lights switch on event. It's on Thursday 27th November and are playing at 7pm inside Craven Court Shopping Centre for around 40 minutes as the shops are open till 8pm. Even though we'll technically be playing inside it'll be chilly, so wrap up warm. We hope that most of you can make it so we show the locals how good we are and get into the Christmas spirit!

Bookings for 2015

Yes, you've heard right.....we have been booked for a concert in the village of Carleton. They have a full social calendar for their village hall all year round and we have been asked to join in their Harvest Home festival next October. Their fun filled evening starts at 6pm with a Jacob Join, followed by something like a family quiz and then we will play. After the concert we can let people try out some musical instruments. We'll provide more details nearer the this space!

Orchestra Fees

Unfortunately we will be increasing our fees from £3 to £3.50 a rehearsal from January 2015. We need to do this to cover our annual public liability insurance and we thought this was the fairest way to cover the cost. The decision hasn't been taken lightly and we feel that the orchestra is still great value for members. Instead of an annual membership fee with added rehearsal fees we only have the 'pay as you play' option. As a community group we are conscious of national and local funding cuts for The Arts and this is one effective way of ensuring that the orchestra survives in the long term.

Funding news

We applied to Skipton Town Council in July 2014 for a grant to buy a flatpack drum kit. Unfortunately we weren't successful as money is in short supply these days. However, Tricia has come to our rescue by donating a large cheque from the charity project called Tutti. We have now been able to purchase a very impressive flatpack kit and we hope to store it at the church so it's always available at rehearsals.

Funding for Musical Instruments

We are lucky as we have a connection with the manageress of Clarks shoes in Skipton and we were encouraged to put an funding application to the Clarks Foundation. They awarded us £100 to put towards buying a brass instrument. They also gave us a £25 voucher to use as a raffle prize and this is being saved for the Christmas concert. After looking around we have bought a fantastic second hand cornet that has hardly been used. This mean that we now have a flute, half sized violin, cornet, clarinet and tons of percussion to get the audiences involved. This is on top of a spare electronic keyboard and our new flatpack drumkit!

New and Lapsed Members

We always welcome back lapsed members as we realise that life has a funny way of taking over sometimes so please feel free to return. New members are welcome as well so please do spread the word that we are here. We often have posters at our rehearsals for you to take away and put up at village halls, work staffrooms, churches and so on. Please do take one home next time.

Keeping in touch...

From time to time we send out emails as well as a newsletter. Please can you keep us updated of any changes to your email address. Also, if we do not hold any details for you, please let us know and we can add you our mailing list. Likewise, if you do not wish to receive any emails from us, please let us know and we will remove your details. We do not share your information with any organisations. We purely use it for keeping in touch with what is happening with the orchestra.....and the odd social!
