Title One Update
Helping your student fall in LOVE with reading!
With Valentine's Day getting close, we want to share with you some tips and tricks to get your student to either begin to or continue to LOVE reading!
Read - In order to get your student to LOVE reading, they should see you reading! Point out the ways you read whether it is for pleasure, to seek information, to follow instructions, or to connect with others.
Dedicate a time for reading - Make it a ritual in your day. Find a place in your house for you and your student to enjoy a book. 15 minutes is better than nothing, it just has to be the habit in your house.
Allow your student to choose the book or thing they WANT to read - If you want your student to LOVE reading, this is a great start. This may mean they pick something a little harder for them to understand or something that may be too easy for them. Once they find a subject they are interested in, you can guide them to other books they can read to learn more, and those books can be closer to the level they are at.
Invite your student to talk about what they are reading - Getting your student to discuss and really socialize about the things they are reading will help them not only comprehend what they are reading but will also make reading more enjoyable for them.
Storytelling - Listening to reading can develop a love of reading in your student. Find a good podcast or look up books on Storyline Online where they can listen to others tell stories or read a book to them. Recite your favorite folktale, urban legend or fairytale to them. Asking them open ended questions about the characters or the plot will help them with comprehension.
Peer Pressure - Have your student take recommendations from their peers. They may find a series or a genre that they are very into just because a friend is also very into it.
Read the book, then watch the movie - There are many books that have been adapted into movies, and even more on the way! A great way to get kids into reading is pointing this out to them. Once you have read the book and then watched the movie, ask your student to compare the two. See which one they enjoyed more.
Do not give up! - Explore different kinds of fiction, poetry, graphic novels, books of world records and kooky facts, profiles of presidents and sports heroes, gross-out science books. Get suggestions from a cool teacher or librarian. Just work together to find something they enjoy!
Hopefully these tips will help you and your student fall in LOVE with reading!
