Slaves Need Help
Hi Kids, I am going to teach you about freedom quilts. Let’s start off with the North Star pattern. When the slaves saw the North Star pattern they knew to follow the North Star to Canada and freedom. Let’s go to the next one Bears Paw pattern. This tells the slaves to follow the bear to landmarks and there might be places to find food for their journey. Next let’s learn about the Flying Geese pattern. This told the slaves to follow the geese that fly north to find a home. It also told them where to find water incase their mouth is dry. Next let’s do the Log Cabin pattern. This meant that when they get to their northern state to build a house there. It also meant there was a safe house nearby. A safe house is where slaves can stay and rest and get medicine. When they are ready they can go to the next stop on their journey. Next the Drunkards path pattern this told the slaves to go in a zigzag motion. Finally the monkey wrench pattern told the slaves to grab their tools to help them on their journey. Freedom quilts helped slaves a lot because it helped them to get to Canada and other northern states so they could escape their owners and be free.
