Chapter 3: Transforming Curriculum
Identifying Learning Goals and Objectives
"A third curricular transformation that collaborative teams can undertake is to translate prioritized standards into goals or objectives. The terms goals and objectives are commonly used interchangeably. [They] are statements--derived from prioritized standards--that outline the knowledge and skills students need to acquire. An objective should specify a performance, such as 'Students will be able to correctly identify and name the bones in the human body.' At this stage in the process, objectives need not be extremely specific, but neither should they be too broad. It is important to note that there is a great deal of discussion about the proper way to construct objectives. Technically, it is useful to think in terms of two basic forms for an objective.
- Students will understand...
- Students will be able to...
The reason for the two formats is that content knowledge can be organized into two broad categories: declarative and procedural. Declarative knowledge is information; one understands information. Procedural knowledge involves skills, strategies, and processes. A student demonstrates mastery of this type of content by executing the skill, strategy, or process.
As mentioned previously, we typically recommend that collaborative teams identify between eight and fifteen prioritized standards for a year-long course. Because standards often encompass multiple objectives, the set of prioritized standards might produce around thirty or more individual objectives."
