A Message from Dr. Bearden
Wow!! Can you believe that we are starting a brand new decade? Happy 2020 to each of you!! I hope that your holiday break was filled with all of the things you and your family loved!! Mine was most definitely restful and filled with family and friends!! I have to admit it was hard to turn that "wake up" alarm back on but I am thankful to be back at Summit Hill ES and to see/hear our Huskies fill its halls with their voices!
#SHEShares for DECEMBER:
SHE students joined students from Birmingham Falls and Crabapple Crossing elementary schools in collecting toys for Lily's Toy Drive. The huge box was overflowing with new unwrapped toys!! Thank you to all of the families, who gave to this wonderful gift giving opportunity for children.
Thank you to 5th grade teachers and parents who created a wonderful service project/thank you gift for our fifth grade students to craft and then give to Milton police and fireman. Fifth graders created mugs, filled them with candy, and wrapped them in festive cellophane. The individual mugs were delivered to Milton Fire and Police stations with a framed "thank you" collage.
Playground Update:
We are working with Miracle Playground to secure an installation date in the very near future. As soon as we have the date, I will communicate with you all about the logistics of the installation.
SHE Staff Update:
On Thursday before the break, Ms. Melisa Eichele, our media specialist, resigned for family reasons and will not return for the second semester. We have a substitute ready to cover her position. The media center assistant, Ms. Williams, will assist the substitute and the media center will be open as usual for our teachers and students. I will give you an update on how we will fill this vacancy as soon as I have more information.
For our 4th grade vacancy, we have decided on a candidate and our human resources office is involved in finalizing the hire of this veteran teacher. We are very excited about the candidate and, as soon as possible, I will share the name and details with our 4th grade students and parents.
SHE Safety:
During the first week of each semester, schools are required to hold each safety drill. The drills are:
Evacuation: this drill requires that we move staff and students outside of the building at least 300 feet away from the building. An evacuation drill prepares staff and students to move quickly and safely in the event of an emergency inside the building, such as an accidental fire.
Shelter: this drill requires all staff and students to move to interior walls away from windows. During a shelter drill, staff and students practice kneeling and covering his/her head. A shelter drill prepares staff and students to move quickly and safely in the event of severe weather.
Soft Lockdown: this drill requires staff and students to stay in their classrooms. This drill prepares staff and students to stay safely inside classrooms in the event of a potential threat either inside or outside the building.
Hard Lockdown: this drill requires staff and students to lock themselves in their classroom and to hide quietly away from windows. This drill prepares staff and students to move quickly and safely to a hiding place in a locked classroom in the event of a potential threat in- and/or outside the building.
Safety drills are important and help us practice keeping all staff and students safe at all times and in all situations. We always tell the students when we are practicing and why it is important. We also reiterate that drills mean that there is no danger and that we are just practicing.
FLU INFORMATION FROM FCS:
The flu season is extended for the state of Georgia and school children are especially at risk for the flu. Click FLU UPDATE for the latest message from FCS, which contains helpful tips for families! Stay well and wash, wash, wash your hands...
That is it for this week! As always, thank you for reading and for your partnership!
Please reach out if you have any questions or anything to share. Take care, Lorrie
