HAPPY MAKAR SANKRANTI!
I've just returned from an amazing teacher training in Costa Rica with my teacher Shiva Rea, and while I'm not exactly thrilled to be back in a winter climate, I re-enter into Island Life feeling full of gratitude for our beautiful community, my enthusiastic and dedicated students, and the grounding I experience every time I "come home", returning to the things that center me- domesticity, parenting and teaching.
Today, January 15th, is the first day of the Hindu celebration of Makar Sankranti which marks the beginning of our journey towards the light of the Summer Solstice. This is the birth of a new cycle, and an opportunity to let go of old patterns of thinking, of doing, or reacting, that do not serve your highest good, and an auspicious time for calling in new ways to navigate your life which yield abundance and an uplifted sense of self.
So if it interests you, perhaps take a moment today to sit, light a candle and meditate. Feel the sacred breath move in and out of your body, and know that you join thousands of sadhus and pilgrims in India in doing so. You are connected. Your vibrations are felt and received. You are part of something so much bigger than our individual selves. And no matter what is going on in your personal or professional life, everything is happening as it is meant to unfold. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Every negative pattern is there to teach you something. Every positive pattern has the power to inspire.
I hope you will join me, and I look forward to seeing you on the mat.
Om Suryaye Namaha

New classes at The Westmoor's Wellness Center
I'm thrilled to now be a part of the team of talented team of yoga teachers at Nantucket's premier members club - which offers discounted winter memberships for year-round Islanders.
Yoga can find me there 4 times a week:
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:30amSaturdays at 10:30am
and my signature classes at The Yoga Room continue...
Every Thursday night at 5:30pm at The Yoga Room, I will be leading a Prana Vinyasa-Inspired Slow Flow* practice, which will focus on a different or revolving peek asana. Utilizing pulsation vinyasa, rhythmic vinyasa, and body vinyasa, I will lead you into safe and engaged alignment, while inviting you to eventually hold poses which will require your full commitment and breath awareness to maintain. This class will introduce you to the prana Vayus, or directions of energy, that move through the body- and when unimpeded create both physical and emotional equanimity and harmony.
*These classes could both be described as "challenging" but Slow Flow is appropriate for all levels and employs an approach to yogasana that will teach beginner and intermediate students how to structure a sustainable practice and avoid injury.
You can also find me at TYR every Sunday at 10am. This is a mixed level flow class with additional time spent fostering the group dynamic through seated meditation, breath work and moving as one unified body. Various pranayama techniques, including nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) and bastrika (breath of fire) are a large component of class. Kryias (cleansing techniques) such as kapalbhati are also routinely explored. The physical yoga practice, or asana, includes a mixed-level approach to arm balances & inversions, and subtle but intense core work. Class is concluded with a lengthy savasana. Sunday’s classes are designed so that students can have a fuller more complete body-mind-and spirit experience; incorporating all the key components of a traditional hatha yoga class.
