Labor Day Celebrates Our Commitment to Catholic Social Justice
"Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.
Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this:
to care for orphans and widows in their affliction
and to keep oneself unstained by the world." ~ James 1
Dear St. Clare School Families,
From USCCB's Pastoral Aid for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time:
In our own families and communities, we have likely experienced the effects of prioritizing the “god of money.” We see this when unemployed persons seek work but cannot find it (Evangelii Gaudium), or when people are forced to accept work that pays too little to support a family (in Laborem Exercens). We also see this when employment fails to offer those life and dignity-affirming benefits that our long Catholic tradition affirms must be available for every worker and their families in the areas of sick leave, maternity leave, time for rest, and quality health insurance (Pope Francis). We also know that many of the goods we buy and the products we use every day were produced by people—sometimes even children—working under terrible conditions in poor countries.
Our Catholic social teaching calls us to protect the dignity of work and the right of workers. I hope that you will take the opportunity during this Labor Day weekend to take to heart the sacrifices that many in our community have to make in order to make ends meet. More importantly, I hope that we can instill in our children the respect for all work and to be grateful for all workers.
St. Clare students have been hard at work all week with iPads, campus safety drills and transitioning from summer break. Thank you for your part in getting the students to school on time, helping them prepare for school each day and gently nudging them to do their "job" as students. Our goal is to provide an environment where students feel safe and loved so that they can practice a growth mindset.
Thank you for your patience if you haven't been getting the communication you need. However, please, please, please...do not hesitate to contact the school office if something seems amiss or if you have heard conflicting information. Conventional wisdom asks us to go to the source for clarification. This is how a community builds trust so that we can continue to work on becoming a better version of ourselves. I am an email or ParentSquare message away: cmantecon@dsj.org. I am happy to hear from you!
Here are some other ways to find information: search a ParentSquare post from us, your homeroom teacher or room rep, check the St. Clare School Google Calendar (it's public!), check the website, call the office. If you need help accessing ParentSquare or PowerSchool, please let Miss Teresea know.
To continue our effort to get to know each other better and to dialog about things that matter to us, I am inviting you to share coffee or tea with me (A Cup with the Principal) in the Faculty Lounge on Wednesday, Sept. 5 immediately following the morning assembly. As I've said to many of you, please forgive me if I don't remember your names immediately. I appreciate you introducing yourselves when we meet in the hallway or black top. Thank you for your patience with me! I am so grateful for all the smiles and the waves. You have been so kind!
I hope to see many of you at tomorrow's mass (REMEMBER: FULL UNIFORM). Nothing says community more than gathering together at the table.
Peace!
Mrs. Cecile Mantecón, Principal
