SIS November News Fall 23
We Are Solon Strong!
A Note from the Principal
October seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye! Students got into the rhthm of the school year and our staff has really built some strong relationships with kids that have enabled them to really focus on instruction and the needs of our students. I want to take this time to thank all of you who helped make our Halloween celebration so smooth! We are SO VERY BLESSED by our families with your donations and giving of your time! We work hard on the daily so that we can enjoy these special events when they arrive! Take a peek at the fun we had below! A picture is truly worth a 1000 words!!
A Few Reminders:
- With trick-or-treating over, many students have access to more candy than normal. While we understand our students love their sweet treats, please continue to help your child make healthy snack choices for our morning snack time. We do not allow candies or cookies for morning snack. One fun-sized bag of candy with a students lunch is certainly ok, but we do not allow multiple packages of candy or full-sized candy bars to be consumed during the school day. We greatly appreciate your support in helping students make healthy choices.
- The temperatures have dropped significantly this week and our SIS students go outside for recess most days. Please encourage your child to wear proper outdoor clothing for recess as students are outside for about 30 minutes following lunch. Gloves and winter hats are a necessity as the winter months begin approaching. Please consider writing your child's name inside his/her coats and/or sweatshirts. Our lost and found is growing and will continue to do so. If we can locate a name we can help get items back to their rightful owner.
- If your child is going to be absent, please email his/her homeroom teacher and our office, at sisoffice@solon.k12.ia.us. Emailing the office is critically important, especially for changes in end of day routines for kids. Teachers are often unable to check emails until after students leave for the day. Emailing both the classroom teacher and the office helps make sure the message is received and passed along.
Yours in Education--
Mrs. Holtz
Halloween Fun!
October School-Wide Celebration of Responsibility
We wrapped up the month at our school-wide assembly on Thurs., Oct. 26 with a little video on ways we practice and demonstrate responsibility and then celebrated the vast number of students who filled their Spartan Squad responsibility cards! SO MANY of our students filled multiple cards!! This was BY FAR the largest group of SIS Stand Out Students we have had! We wrapped up our assembly with our Orange Chair competition where classes competed in an egg relay. They practiced being responsible carrying their <plastic> eggs back and forth until their team was finished! Mrs. Visser's class came out victorious and was so excited to win!
Take a peek at our Stand Out Students and Orange Chair winners below and then take a peek at what's to come in November when we focus on gratitude!

SIS Library News
This month the main focus for our time together has been looking at the different features of book covers and why the pictures, fonts and other elements are important. Students have been working hard to create a poster, cereal box book or slide show recreating the cover of a book that they have enjoyed. Our goal is to have them on display in the Media Center during conferences, so make sure you stop by on your way to the book fair to see all their hard work and creativity!
If you have any cereal boxes, we would still love to put them to use. Your student can drop them off at the Library anytime!
Thank you!
